Will a 4L60E live behind a 408?
I'm currently building a 408 to go in my 99 Camaro as a DD with a 11:1 408 with a TSP Giant camshaft Yank SS 3600 stall and a 150 shot of spray for the track. I need the overdrive functions of the overdrive since it's my DD and see so many conflicting info on what these transmissions will and wont take. Im guessing I will be close to 500RWHP off the spray so with that in mind what do you guys think? I guess its worth mentioning that I already have a freshly and fully built 4L60E sitting here in the shop awaiting install once the engine goes together. I got it on a parts trade straight from a Tranny builder who builds up to the standards of FLT and the likes. It would be the equivilent of a stage 4 FLT tranny.

Here is a picture of one of our test vehicles. It runs a 4l60e FLT level 5 W/vac mod, billet output,Vig, runnig 750+ rwhp. It was also featured in Hot Rod magazine Drag Week issue. This vette not only runs 9.60's but does cruise nights as well. It has almost a 100 9 sec passes this year alone not to mention all the drag week miles that were put on it. Here is a pic of it riding on two wheels!

Damn! Looks like I need a stage 5! I will have to look on your website Vice to see what the differences are between the 2 stages. I know enough to realize that RPM's are one of the major killers of these killers of these tranny's. The one problem I will face is the powerband of my cam. It is designed to shift at 6800. Do you guys do something to address the rpm issue? If so what part od the 4L60E is it that is most affected by the high rpm's?

Take it from me... (and a few others b/t here & PT)... better build it better than just "right"... else, it won't last behind the monster you're building. Good luck!

I have had no problems with my 4L60E stage 5 trans built by Extreme Performance. Putting well over 750 rwhp and I drive on the street or race it without any problems.Plus the car race weight is 3800lbs and street weight is over 4000 lbs.

there are a number of good people building these transmissions to the level your asking. I would suggest using someone that has actualy done it as apposed to someone doing it "like" the "proven" players. The "combinations" are more than the some of there parts and these vendors have years of trial and error. This is whats allowed these transmissions to get to the level they are today.

Just got my 2 year old FLT level 4 upgraded to level 5.
Chuck at FLT is a heck of a guy to deal with. (Thanks Chuck )
2 years of NA runs & nitrous through the shifts and the level 4 was just starting to slip 2>3 under juice. I just got the refreshed level 5 today and that thing is a work of art.
I can't wait for some 10s passes next week.
Biggest killer of trannies is rpm. That is why I designed my vette (DD car) cam combo to shift at 6100 only. The stocker performs flawlessly.

Yes just copying the parts used in the units sold will not guarantee the same durabilty, There are many little tricks learned though years of trial error and experimentation not simply putting heavy duty parts in, In fact we learned over the years that sometimes using certain combinations of parts and shift kits etc can actually shorten the life of this transmission if certain things arent taken into account,

I forgot to say in my earlier post that the vette(4l60e) in the picture above is featured in the Janurary issue of Hot Rod Magazine along with this truck that we built a 4l80e for because there is no way to get a 60 to last in a 1000rwhp+ truck. This truck too has been a research tool that we built 60's for and determined that an 80 was the only way to go.
