Default horsepower rating

What is a auto trans out of a 98 t/a rated for? Its the factory trans and i was wondering what kind of hp these can hold?

I think a lot of it depends on how you use your car. Do you race every weekend? If you don't beat the crap out of it, it should handle over 400rwhp without any big hassles. Make sure you run a tranny cooler though.

i think it is rated by torque instead of horsepower. it is the force or pressure that taxes the tranny not the speed of aceleration. The torque rating is around 650 lbs of torque.

Stock motor has a converter that flashes at around 1500 rpm with a torque multiplier of around 1.9 from the converter. Then the converter locks up and the ratio is 1:1

True hp is a function of torque and weight moving a certain distance in a certain span of time , Typically though the 400 hp mark is considered reasonable for a stock 4L60E

Some would not agree but since some of these cars are not to far from there stock rwhp and gm would of course have considered that I would say at the rear wheels

nah i agree. it just seems like i remember gm rates the tranny by torque but i am sure they include hp some where too.
