Default Best Tranny Pan

I'm looking into a deep transmission pan. I want to purchase the best one that will help me keep the temps down. What do you guys suggest? I heard they make one out there with tubes that run through the pan to get air through to help keep things cool and I also heard the pan had a bung setup to wireup a tranny temp sensor to it. Do any of you know what pan im talking about? Reply with some links so I can buy one.

Thanks

the one you are talking about with the tubes is a derale. i have one and like it. it doesnt have a bung for a temp sensor, but i dont see why one couldnt be installed. it does come with a drain plug which is nice when it comes time to change the fluid again.

Does the derale really keep the tranny temps down?

Do not depend on the pan, get a cooler. Fins or tubes
are all swell until you sit parked with no airflow but the
hot draft off the radiator. At least up front you can
piggyback off the cooling fans (or get a fan equipped
cooler and put it wherever).

i added a pan from a 00 silverado its slightly deeper pan but i agree that a cooler would be a better idea i onlychanged my pan cause i ws servicing my tranny and i had on laying around the silverado pan has a drain plug in it the problem with it is every time you try to pull the plug the drain plug bolt head wants to strip due to its height of the head but looking at it it a threaded plug in it im sure u could put some sort of sensor in there

truck pan would be cheapest, but the B&M Cast pan helps keep fluids minimally lower due to the +3qt capacity.

Are there any other good options besides the b&m pan. My car is lowered and I believe that pan would sit too low to the ground.

+1 for the truck pan. Make sure you also get the correct filter. Some trucks came with a transmission temp sensor. But you could modify the pan and install one just as easily.

I already have a big trans cooler in the front end. I'm just trying to keep the trans temps way down. If I went with a deeper tranny pan and dropped my car say 1" or 1 1/2 " would I have any clearance issues? Basically I want somthing with a drain plug. call me crazy but I change my trans fluid like once every 3 months im trying to save the tranny and see how long it will go It would be nice though to find that one that i heard is out there that already has a temperature sensor port ready to go.

There's a pipe plug above the linkage area for a tranny temp gauge. If memory serves its a 1/8th inch NPT thread size.

I agree, don't count on a deeper pan to keep the temps in check. Use a tranny cooler.

agreed. 175* is the optimum temperature your trans should operate at. then you should change your fluid ever 30k.

changing your fluid any sooner is just overkill and a waste. If you run your trans at a lower temp it may cause premature failure.

i run a cooler also. i mainly wanted the derale pan for the drain plug and that it held a little more fluid, THEN for the fact that it had hose cooling veins. i really didnt expect them to make a huge difference in my temps, but i dont have a gauge so i couldnt tell if they did anyways

I just bought a derale pan off e-bay to put on my truck. I have a temp gauge installed in the pressure port of the trans. I have yet to put it on because of my cross over pipe of teh exhaust. I am trying to wait to get some headers for it. I liked the derale pan better than the B&M because the derale pan is steel. If you do hit something w/the pan the steel will bend before it breaks/leaks. You may have a better chance to limp it home w/o damaging the trans ro fluid lose. You hit something w/aluminum pan it cracks instantly and starts leaking. That is my theory anyway.

Another vote for the truck pan/corresponding deeper filter...Holds a bit more fluid, not much lower than stock, factory fit, drain plug...I've had mine for 2 years. I've seen way too many B&M, TCI, etc deeper pans getting smacked around and breaking because they hang too low and in the center of the car...

also, one thing to remember is that if you get the derale pan, you need a shallow filter. the deep filter will not fit on the derale pan cause of the tubes in there
