2000 TA with TH400 in place of 4L60E with problems
Someone I met at a cruise night recently put a TH400 with 4500 stall into his 2000 TA in place of the 4L60E with the same converter and is having problems.
The car runs properly for 10 seconds, and then starts to pop and sputter.
PCM and the wiring harness are untouched.
It refuses to idle properly after ten seconds.
SES lights and Service Vehicle lights are on as well.
Any thoughts?
I don't believe he has ATAPd the car..
Cheers,
Chris

If he started with a 4l60e, then he has to override the PCM for the tranny, otherwise it'll go into limp home mode. That may be what is happening. Yank sells a tranny tricker for this application if he can't reprogram.
Same converter? Should have to get another converter unless he figured out how to use the input shaft from the 4l60e on his TH400?

Re: 2000 TA with TH400 in place of 4L60E with problems
As far as the limp home mode, I just did a 4l60e swap to TH400 and DID NOT have the computer reflashed nor have I had ANY additional tuning done, yet. I have learned that being that the PCM does not see the tranny anymore, the enging runs extremely rich at idle. I have tried leaning it with the MAFT, but not worky. Possibly he is running so rich after the PCM goes into closed loop, that it is too much for it to handle. Just a thought.
Did he go from a 4l60e with a vacuum modulator to a manual valvebody TH400? If so thn he might have missed plugging the vacuum line for the 4l60e.

Yank sells a tranny tricker that plugs int the harness. The pcm might be thinking the trans is messed up so it's pulling a ton of timing and the car might be running in a limp mode while the pcm tries to save the tranny from further destruction.

Re: 2000 TA with TH400 in place of 4L60E with problems
The PCM DOES NOT go into limp home mode. I haven't gotten a single bit of retuning with my TH400 and my car runs fine. Except at idle where it is pig rich. Now my SES light is on with every code having to do with the tranny, but no problems.
Limp home mode would allow him to atleast move the car for more than 10-15 seconds.
I would get the PCM done with Edit rather than spend $250.00 for the Yank tricker.
