Default Rebuild or a Built Tranny?

My car just spit a DriveShaft on the Dyno. The shop talked their tranny guy and he said most of the time something gets damaged in the transmission when that happens.

Now I have to decide whether I want to rebuild my transmissions output shaft or just go ahead and buy A built tranny now.

My car has 64k and I'm around 420rwhp N/A with maybe a 75-100 shot in the future.

What kind of options do I have with transmission types and builders

Can these sponsors build alot better trannies than these local guys?

I'm only asking because it's a money issue right now. I'm going to be doing all the labor but I need the best deal possible.

Well though not allways true in most cases companies that specialize in performance 4L60E transmissions can build a much better unit than a local shop , Since thats what we do and have learned all the tricks and tips over time, Where as a local shop generally concentrates on stock rebuilds and are unaware beyond the shift kits and few heavy duty parts out there what it takes to build a 4L60E to stand High HP applications

What usually goes wrong with the tranny when they throw Driveshafts?

My Driveshaft took part of the tailshaft with it (separated at the bolts)
And how do you ultimately tell something is wrong if you cant tell by looking.
Comes down to vibration and balance issues? If theres a chance that everything is ok I'de like to capitalize on that.

it is possible its ok but the only way to be sure is to either try it out or take it apart

Well the case is cracked so now I have to figure out If I want to rebuild mine or buy one from Ol' PerformaBuilt. Cash is a problem so I'm going to have my friend pull it apart and inspect it and maybe rebuild it (If there isn't too much damage) for $250

I'm getting a list of parts I want If I do rebuild it and I wanted to run it by here first and maybe get some insight on the parts I'm choosing.

So here it goes....

- High output pump slide spring
- 29 element Borg Warner forward input sprag
- Alto Carbonite PowerBand
- Beast Sungear Shell
- Superior Shift correction package

Now the clutches I Still haven't decided on, I don't know if I want the Z-pack, Blue plates, Alto Red Eagle, Borg Warner or what. Whats best? How many steels? thick or thin?

Another thing I'm not sure on is the use of a shift kit and bigger pistons.
I can barely feel a shift now so I really want a pronounced shift. I can go with a shift kit and pistons or pistons and no shift kit or vice versa.

Again I'm a real amateur when it comes to transmissions so if anyone sees something I'm leaving out or knows of a better part that may be cheaper/better, please speak up. thanks in advance.

Transgo HD-2 Shift kit I'm going to add, since my shifts are pretty much non existent.

Well I ended up finding a great rebuild package.

I now need to decide on which one I want.

The only thing that separates the one kit from the other is the five pinion planets and hardened reaction tube.

Each kit comes with overhaul kit,all frictions, w/3-4 Borg Warner clutches,29 element sprag, Beast Shell, oversize band, complete bushings and thrust washer kits.

The 2nd kit for $220 more comes with the five pinion front and rear carriers with a rollerized heat treated reaction tube.

The thing is, I never plan on putting more than 420 n/a , 550 w/nitrous through my tranny. And it is going to be a semi-DD, so do I really need the five pinion stuff? Or is that more geared towards cars with alot more torque?

So how many of you send your torque converter to get refreshed before installing your new revuilt tranny?

No one can give some advise on the need of 5 pinion stuff?

Once you are into the tranny, I'd overbuild it. 550 on the bottle combined with high rpm shifts is alot.

As far as the converter goes, the biggest risk is whether trash got pumped through it when the tranny broke. If nothing shreaded or broke into small pieces with the break, I wouldn't worry about.

Just the case was cracked so no internal damage to my knowledge.

Anyone have any input on the slide spring for the pump? The guy that I'm buying the kit from the stock spring is fine and putting in a stiffer spring can damage the pump. But then I read posts on here that says the stock spring fails at high rpms.

How many people flush their cooler and lines when installing a rebuilt tranny? My builder said just run a can of carb cleaner through the lines followed with compressed air.
