Synthetic yes or no
This has been said before not to long ago. Dont use synthetic tranny fluid in the 4L60E bc that will cause to much slippage with the clutch packs, cause more friction=more heat= worse performance... Im not gonna flame you for asking this question but just try a search next time if nothing comes then ask the question. Just FYI.
I run Royal Purple synth in my 4L60E, I've put 2 full racing season on it, and my tranny guy just tore it apart & everything and the parts (in his words) look like new. So I question what was said in the previous post. I do have the Z paks in it, and a special 1-2 band, etc etc, but I have had ZERO slipping issues. And I hit it with a butt-load of tq, my car is heavier than most, and my 60' times aint too shabby.
Personally from our perspective we have customers running both , I my self use dexron because I honestly dont see the real advanatage that justifys the added expense of the synth. But from a working presective they seem to be the same to me and I have seen no adverse effects from either in units torn down , As for dexron its cheap , It works and there are plenty of 100000 ile plus never changed the fluild or filter cars out there to testify to it. As far as telling our customers to run its simple as this as long as it meets or exceeds dexron/mercron standards its fine

I started using Dexron 6 in my S10, 181,000 miles and the tranny was slipping terribly. Took it to the shop and told them about it, they told me although it should work fine, it almost a synthetic. and that was causing slippage. Flushed it out and am sticking with dexron 3

I will never use synthetic in a 4L60E. I bought a Level IV trans from Chuck @ FLT (www.finishlinetrans.com) years back. He was specific about using only conventional DexIII in the 4L60E. I plan to stick with his advice, as he is one of the top 4L60E builders in the country, IMO.

myself being a sales rep/dealer/personal user of amsoil, ive heard that synthetic trans fluid causes to much slipage in turn causing the tranny to wear out prematurely. If anyway has PROOF that it was indeed the fluid that caused this, i would like to see it. Amsoil makes TWO different synthetic fluids, one WITH antislip agents and one WITHOUT antislip agents......im just looking for some proof im not trying to knock on anyone!!
I've ran the amsoil synthetic in four trucks and three cars for the last ten years and put an average of 100k on all before I sold them and never have had any issues. On my 98 bbc k3500 which I have had since new I have run the amsoil syn in it and overhauled the stock tranny at 225K and 100k later she is still ticking pulling some very heavy loads. The only reason I overhauled it at 225 was for saftey before it blewup and cost some real money. Overall it looks like its a 50/50 fall either way between synthetic and dexron mercon. I can't beat on synthetic I've just had too good of luck with it. But as I said earlier I only run one brand and change it every 75K

I am not an expert as to which one is best, but I run synthetic in everything, Engine, Tranny, Rear end, Power steering and brakes, I'd run synthetic water in my radiator if they made it!!! j/k! Had synthetic in the Z since I bought it with 71k it now has about 87k with no problems and it sees the track whenever it is open. Have had it in my 02 Avalanche 4l60e for over 30k miles with frequent towing of my boat with no problems(and when I tow the boat it is usually over 100 deg and I am romping on it so I can get to the water as fast as possible!)

yes synthetic pretty much is better in almost every way, better heat dissapate, less foaming, slicker, etc. oh and btw we all realise that during application when one thing comes off, (band or clutch) and the other comes on, there is a tiny bit of slippage this is normal. im talking like for less than .001 sec, its impossible for every tranny to be perfectly timed for the 2-4 band to release exactly when the 3/4 clutches come on under all types of tps opening, so the logic behind that thinking is.....wrong. now i do have to say perfoma is prob the best answer so far. as long as you change it as often as possible, then regular oil is fine, synthetic would be better but hey my dads 94 p/u with 200,000 original trans/ motor ran with synth and regular and it got changed religiously at 15000 sometimes less.
I'm on my third trans in 8000 miles. On the first rebuild, I used Amsoil. On the second, I used Amsoil. Now, I have a Performabuilt trans going in as soon as I have time and am going to use Dextron III.

I know that both Yank and FLT dont recommend using anything synthetic... and if they dont recommend it to go in ther parts, then I wont use it... no matter how much "nicer" it is to run synthetic fluid... the cost alone is rediculious.

The AMSOIL ATF and Torque Drive is for DexIII applications.

Both of the above will work where DexIII is needed and the ATF can also be used in DexVI uses. The ART Supershift is NOT recommend for Dexron applications. This fluid is for C-4 and Type F applications.
