Default major tranny problems, Need help

On friday I was cruising on the highway when I hear this noise in my car and all of a sudden there was smoke everywhere. When I pulled over there was tranny fluid all over the ground. Today the shop calls me and tells me that the front pump has been completly torn up. They are saying that it could be the converters fault and right now they are still messing with it. That really does not make any sense to me. My converter has only about 1500 miles on it. What do you think could have caused this, has anyone ever heard of this before and how much do you think this will cost to fix?

Have you had any harsh shifting or SES lights or made any adjustment to raise pressure settings as this sounds like high line pressure, this might have cracked the pump drive gear making it come apart

I would have to see what actually happened to the pump but unless the converter or flexplate came apart or the bolts came loose and you have allready been driving it 1500 miles I would thing it unlikey that would have killed your pump .As yank mentioned High line is a possibility but you would have noticed and xtreme change in shift quality I would think , If I was you i would goto the shop and ask to see the pump and take a camera and post the pic here you get along with there explaination of what happened .

The only diffrence in shifting was the 1-2 shift. It was really firm. But when this happend I was crusing at 60mph. that is why it does not make any sense.

Was it alot firmer than it was in the past before this happened.
Try and gets some pic of the inside of the pump if you can tomorrow

were you running a external trans cooler, could be possible you over heated the trans and burned up the pump

my tranny shop is charging $1400 to put in a new pump and repair the outside of the converter. Do you think that I am getting ripped off.

They did my tranny and it was under warrenty but when they built my tranny I gave them a Yank PT 4400 and they would not warrenty that so when my tranny took a **** they naturally blamed it on the converter and I had to pay. Something is starting to smell like BS to me

Get the converter back to us!
ASAP as the parts are special and if they cut it open you will lose the warrenty on that also.

they already said that they fixed the converter. It was the outside of the converter that was messed up not the inside.

i didn't get the chance to because as soon as the tranny went out on me I had the car towed to the shop ( on a friday night ) On monay they shipped out the converter and started working on the tranny. So I never got the chance to take pics. I really wish that I could of.

I do not know of any part other than the crank pilot that you can replace without cutting the converter apart and rewelding it again.

sounds more like they cleaned up the marks on the hub that the pump gear made when it broke
