Default Hit the limiter on 2-3 shift (A4)

When i am at the track I hit the limiter on the 2-3 shift. is this just form too much power going through the stock 4l60e is is the tranny messed up. Im going to muve the shift points to see if it fixes it but was wondering if this a common problem with some a4 cars makeing almost 400 rwhp.

I had the same problem after installing my converter(s).

I used my HPP3 to bump the 1-2 shift +2MPH and the 2-3 shift +1MPH. These settings worked best for my car.

Also, be sure the trans oil is properly filled .

parish8,

Just to be clear, in my earlier post I was talking about moving the MPH of the shift points, not changing the rev limiter rpm.

I dunno if that helps out or not, but I just wanted to make certain that I was being clear.

yea, i understood what you said, you probably also raised the rev limiter to keep from hiting it after raising the shift points. I think in MMI case he can try raising the rev limiter or lowering the shift points but if it is like my truck it wont help. my truck started with about a 300rpm flare between gears, then 500rpm, then complete release between gears. i understand this is common around 400rwhp. once i got my truck running well the tranny only lasted about 1week. i would sure try the shift points/rev limiter first just dont be suprized if you need a rebuild.

Raise the rev limiter, adjust your shift points where they need to be for power and if that doesn't fix it. Try a stock descreened TB (ported units screw your shifts up due to lack of line pressure). Then if all else fails leave the shifter in OD when running at the track and it should cure the problem. This is VERY common and not just with cars that are close to 400 at the wheels.

Also if you have a cam in the car and are not running a vacume modulator kit then there could be a big problem there too. Cams will end up reducing line pressure and causing either shifting problems, premature trans failure or both.

I thought it was bad to use your A4 as a manual, because i just got mine out of the shop because i blew a front and rear seal because i did that.

It's not at all unusual to see an unhappy A4 behind a ~400 RWHP motor. Not saying that every last one will die at that point, but it's not at all surprising. Slip on the 2-3 is usually the first sign of Something Bad. Do check the fill, just in case.

F8LPONY made a good point about vacuum, supposedly MAP pressure is another bit of data the pcm looks at to determine line pressure.

so should I take it in to the dealer and have them look at it? or play with the shift points and see if that strightens it out.

I would play with shift points first.

You must have a kick *** dealer that will cover you or even TALK to you after doing enough mods to get 400rwhp.

I solved my 2-3rd shift problem by accident. I lost the C clip on my outlet tranny line and caused it to pop loose from the housing and pumped all but 1qt of tranny fluid out. After dropping the pan and adding the fluid the tranny was fine (lucky). After adding the tranny fluid and playing with the fluid level for a day i began to make WOT passes and the car has never shifted so hard going into 3rd and does not drag and catch the rev limiter going into 3rd gear now I think that the problem with my 4year ordeal with hitting the revlimiter going into 3rd gear was because of trash in the lines and filter causeing me to lose full line preassure and cause the rev limiter problem. I think it would help to FLUSH the whole system and add the remaining 7qts and try your luck like i did.
