my tranny started slipping on the 2-3 shift, now it is doing all sorts of strange things, staying in 1st gear untill 4k rpm even under the lightest throttle. is this a diferent problem or the next step for a failing tranz. also i have a new tranny on the way, how do i know if my converter is bad or poluted, i have a yank 3000 and it cost $600 or so and i don't want to buy a new one but i don't want to mess up the new tranny either.

 

It sounds like it's coming apart . But you don't want to stick the old converter on the new trans with all the clutch/band & bushing material going thru the fluid? Play it safe, new trans+ new converter & flush trans cooler = happy trans.

 

Probably got some friction material gunkin' up your valvebody.

Lemme clear up a little misconception about friction material polluting converters and thus polluting a freshly rebuilt tranny but let me start by saying that I DON'T disagree with flushing out a converter. But, to talk to some folks you would think that all of the junk from fried frictions is pumped straight into the converter and that failure to flush the converter automatically means impending tranny failure.

...The fluid that goes into the converter first goes through the tranny filter. I'm NOT saying that stuff won't slip through the filter and make it's way into the converter, I'm just stating that I've never seen it happen with mine.
