this man is correct. use an ice pick or a very small flathead screwdriver to pry the littl c-clips off, then with some persuation, the lines just pop right out of the tranny.

and just a little helpful tip, put those c-clips back ON the tranny before the install, then the cooler lines will just bump right into the holes. you'll hear a little pop so you know they're set, then you wont have to fool with those clips after the lines are on.

Not on his car, the earlier (all LT?) have to be unsrewed. It's a PITA.

that sucks... the c-clips arent exactly a ride in the park either (considering the room you have to work)

Hey guys-

I've been reading guys are replacing the stocker transmission with a T56.. Would this swap be fairly straight forward?

I think my transmission may be on the way out - and if I'm going to replace it, I'm going to get something that doesn't suck.. Might as well get something that could take a lil' power too.. Been thinkin about getting my vig bumped up to 3200..

A T56 is a Manual. Your post kind of contradics itself saying about a T56 conversion, then to bump up your 3200 stall.. Either one or the other.

I think there is a sticky on converting an A4 to an M6.

Just get a beefed up A4 and call it a day.. How much power you makin?

His 1st post says a 98 Auto trans... So assuming its an LS1, it would have the "C" clip.

Yeh, my bad.. I am obviously just in the ground stages of trying to decide what I want to do..

I wanted a manual when I bought the car, but they had 2000's and 2001's on the lot.. I made an almost joking offer with the salesman on the "that white 2000" and he paused and said.. "come into my office.."

So I came home with a 2000 A4.. If I had my druthers I would have snagged an M6..

I'm not really into street racing, etc.. I just enjoy having a fast car.. Part of the fun is the manual transmission..

I need to figure out exactly what the issue is with my transmission and go from there.. It'd be nice if it just needed fluid and not a new tranny..

It's like it has a hard time trying to decide which gear it wants to be in.. 2nd or 3rd.. 3rd or 4th..

Like it thinks it should down shift to 3rd or sometimes it will think it needs to upshift to 4th..

Seems to happen a lot on curvy roads, when your in the curve with a little power on..

It's not really a slip - per say - where it throws out to neutral...

Not hard at all imo, just set aside a day to do it and be sure you've got a tranny jack laying around.

ok here are a few pointers, i've this like 15 times so I got it down pretty good,

the clips on the cooler lines come right off with a hook pic, usually takes me 5 minutes at most. then when the trans is out, put them back on the fittings without the lines on, then just push the lines back on untl they click when you put it back it.

for me, the hardest part is the the dipstick bolt, you can't really see it once your hand is in there so feel for it, get a 15mm gear wrench it will save you a lot of time.

when you put the trans back in get 2 people one in the back to slide the trans forward and one in the front to guide it on, at the same time pop the dipstick back into the case otherwise it is nearly impossible to so get it back in once the trans is bolted up.

for seating the conveter, push and twist 3 times like the other guys said, then take a straightedge and put it across the bellhousing and there should be about 3/4 of an inch between the straightedge and the hub of the conveter.

What happens if you don't get the converter all the way in?

I'm finishing up my Performabuilt lvl2 install this weekend. Had a problem with the bellhousing to transmission bolts. PB blaster and a T50 Torx work wonders.
