Default Speedometer correction

I'm looking into getting some 3.73's for my 96' A4 Z28's rear end but I am concerned with how I am going to correct the speedometer. I know this can be done by reprograming the computer but i dont want to spend 150 bucks on a mail order tune that i only really need for the gears. Is there a gear on the transmision where the speedometer cable gets its reading that i can replace to compensate, or is it a electro-magnetical type sensor that doesnt work with any gears? Is there any way i can do this without the mailorder tune.

Thanks

Is the speedometer and odometer the only thing I will need to correct or will i have to adjust anything else in the transmission like any kind of hydraulic line pressure so it shifts correctly?
