Default 4L60E Interchange Questions

I am in the planning stages of building a LS1 powered, mid engine car for track use. The transaxle is always the problem for something like this, but I think I have found a good solution. I plan to use a Megasquirt computer to control the transmission coupled with a Shrifter paddle shifter. My questions concern which trans I should use, a C5 trans, or a regular RWD 4L60E.

1. I talked with a guy that already mated the parts togther and he said the C5 Vette version of the 4L60E requires changes to the torque convertor and front pump to mate directly to the engine using the bellhousing from a Camaro. Does anyone know more about this? What are the differences?

2. If I use a normal RWD 4L60E, will it mate directly to the C5 differential? From the few pics I have seen, it looks like the output shaft from the C5 trans is longer than other applications.

Thanks for any help you can give.
Ken

Anyone? I have to believe someone has done this.

Thanks

1. The stator on the pump is a different length I believe between the C5 and an F-Body and the input shafts are deffinately different between a C5 and an F-Body/Truck (LSX).

2. No, you can't just bolt a C5 differential to an F-body/Truck 4L60E. The rear of the case is completely different. You would need some sort of an adapter to get a C5 differential to bolt up to the tail of a non-vette 4L60E.

Thanks for the reply. I thought all the 4L60E's went to the same 6 bolt pattern on the rear? I was thinking the differential used this same bolt pattern? My concern on the diff side was the length and spline configuration of the output shaft. I am surprised GM would make a different case for the Vette. Your comments about the stator confirms what I had heard about the input side. Either way, it looks like I will be changing some components, and since I will probably want an aftermarket convertor, I might as well start out with a C5 trans.

Thanks again,
Ken

C5 Vette trans has a unique case, output shaft, early models used the standard 298mm torque converter (effects turbine shaft & stator shaft), and later a 300mm torque converter. I can't remember offhand what year they switched.

2005 was the 1 and only year with this. It was a 4l65e unit for the vette.

Vince,
Thanks for the response. So, does this mean any case with the common rear bolt pattern (minus 2006) will physically bolt to the differential?

Thanks

Yes I believe this to be true. However in the 05 model I would have to think that because of the change in the input and the stator along with the converter, that there might have been some changes in the torque tube.
