Install Yank and Lose 3rd & 4th gear??
Just installed a Yank TC i got used. Guy said it had 5k miles on it. We got it all apart, PITA by the way) and swapped the tc in about a minute and got it all buttoned back up. checked fluid, have a cooler to install but needed to get back home tonight, so left and started the 30 miles drive home, got about 10 miles then in 3rd or 4th gear all it does is slip. no lockup or anything. 1st and 2nd are just fine, but it shifts to 3rd and no going, all slip. no shiftkit or anything yet, thats on the way but im really confused now. Got a tow back home, didnt wanna risk the tranny ridin in 2nd at 40 and burnin it up. So any help or anythign esle needs to be known to figure out the problem lemme know.

we ddint lose but maybe a few drops. Amd the converter was full when we got it on. still we rechecked it and all. but after it started slippin i checked again and it didnt even read on the dipstick, so i added a quartand it still did it. could there have been trash or soemthin in the conveter that caused it to block a line or something?
Check the fluid.. with the motor running. You lost more fluid than you think.
BTW: Did you prefill the converter with fluid?

yes, we prefilled it. im gonna head out ina few and get some fluid and change it. the book syas 5 quarts, does that include whats in the converter? all i planon doing is dropping the pan and drainin it then adding new or should i get it flushed?
You need to add more fluid - do not drive the car again until the fluid level is correct on the dipstick.
You cannot come anywhere near filling a converter by pouring fluid into it before it is installed. You can usually only get about a quart or two into it but they hold more like 4-6 quarts.

If there's not enough fluid of course it's gonna slip. if it's just a qt low it'll slip on the 2-3 shift. I say check the fluid (with car running and warm) check it if it's low then add..it's over then the access needs to come out (it's just as bad to overfill it). Also did you shim the converter when u installed it? a loose converter on the flywheel could cause some major damage not to mention lots of converter slippage

How many engagement points did you hit when you sled the converter on to the input shaft? Hopefully you got all 3

Ok, well this is good news, just ran low on fluid. I only drove maybe 10 miles or so and it was slippin pretty bad the last 2-3. But i got a shiftkit in today and planon instllin that and the cooler this week along with new filter and fluid, and yes the TC was all the way on. i've been told it wont drive right at all if its not in properly. and it drove right for the first few miles. Well im pretty sure it was just low, i dropped the pan today and the fluid is dark with some sediment. dont think it burnt anything to badly. i have 6qts to go in or should i add more?

Don't make the same mistake again - use your dipstick to tell you when you have enough fluid. Do not guess (even an educated one) about how much to add.
