What tires are you using? Do you have 2.73's with your stall?

Stall first, gears or a new rear end later

Just make sure to match up your stall, choice of gears, and cam. For 1/4 mile ETs, this can make or break the car

If your driving is on the highway, it won't affect it, or maybe improve it a little since it's lighter. If you're in a lot of traffic or surface streets, the stall will cost you some. My stall is a 3000, and it cost me 1-2 mpg in town. Maybe +1 on the highway.

I drive my 3600 stall 40-50miles a day and love it. No change at all in mileage on the highway because once in lockup its the same as a stock stall. overall average with mixed traffic and highway was only a 1 mpg drop. That was when I had a stall and 2.73's.

Gears will cost you more of a MPG loss from highway driving than a stall will in traffic imo. I lost around 3 mpg form the change to 3.73's.

My last trip to the race track, I averaged right at 22 MPG, and that was with cruising at 3k rpm on the highway/interstate (a3 instead of an a4 here), doing some city driving, and making 6 passes

There are other threads on this and a search would bring them up...but not to go off topic, I could see how it depends what you have now. 3.23 cars are obviously better off than the 2.73 cars where a gear swap would be more beneficial.

My 2.73/3.42 swap cost me nothing in town. Maybe 1-2 on the freeway but I didn't have the 2.73's long enough to ever do trip mpg with them.

Is the tune after a gear intall only to correct the speedo or is their other things that need to be adjusted also.

Since I put my stall in I have fallen back in love with my car. It helps from a dig but is no slouch from a roll. Get the stall first and you will not be disappointed.

You will need to tune for new shift points. They will be off, as in the computer they are a MPH value, rather than an RPM value.

At least that goes for LT1s, LS1s are likely to be the same.

W/ 3.42 and yank 3500 2.5 str I get 240-260 miles/tank city driving w/ some highways and on highway I get almost 400 miles/tank IIRC.

i would go with 3.73 gears (instead of a stall) if i had 2.73s. i realize that my opinion is going to be the minority, but allow me to explain and maybe someone will chime in with valid counter-points.

the overall feel of the gear change from your 2.73 to 3.73 would be dramatic. even if doesn't quite translate to anywhere near as much of a difference on the track, the sotp feel seems to be widely recognized as priceless around here.
the stall is really going to build up a lot of heat in your transmission and nobody likes a hot transmission. i'd also expect it to be a pain when it comes to keeping traction (especially on wet road surfaces).
i realize a stall is great because it brings the torque, but greatly adds to heat and traction problems - not an issue with drag radials at the track.

I think I see your point. A stall is more suitable for drag racing with slicks and gears are a better fit for a DD. It looks like most of the people who said "Stall first" already have 3.23's or higher and do alot of drag racing. The more I read these threads I realize I should probably do gears first since this is my DD have no plans on drag racing. I may go once just to see what the car can do but thats about it. Thanks for your input
