Stall or gears

Well some of you are saying to get gears before the stall and that is a valid and respectable statement, but I have heard otherwise.
2.73's suck, we all know that. Many dead spots throughout its gearing. Getting a stall eliminates those dead spots, thus reversing how crappy 2.73's are.
Plus, you won't get a gear whine and the stock 10 bolt will stand up to more punishement if you leave the pumpkin untouched.
Someone also said something about the effect on the tranny. Well, a stall multiplies and increases the torque and heat, but only when you are hard on your car. A tranny cooler is a must when getting a stall.
So what I say is this.
If its a track toy, I would get the stall. If you get DR's and suspension stuff, your going to chip aftermarket gears sooner or later.
If its a dd, I would consider gears, but I would still want the stall first because just normal driving isn't going to hurt anything.
Just my .02

Another reason to go with gears first if you planning on them anyway , Is your stall rpm is heavily afected by a rear ratio. If you get a 3500 tall based on 273 gears then get 373 gears it wont act at all like a 3500 stall anymore. Plus if I planed on doing a substaintial build up I would probaby do the trans and converter at the same time.

i personally didnt feel much if any difference going from a 2.73 to 3.42 rear with my 3800 stall. not I have a 4000 so it's a bit diffrerent. for comparison of the 2.73 and 3.42 what I noticed the most was on-highway rpm's had changed. the low end grunt of the car wasnt as affected by the gear as the stall did. (when I say affected was, that the stall was felt more on low end as having a factor on acceleration than the gears did)

Do the gears if its a daily driver.High stall if your taking it to the track. The 3.73 are a perfect gear.I got mine because I needed that acceleration from stop and especially from a roll.My car is a daily driver. My friend at the track knocked of .3 on street tire.I already have had the gears in for 3 weeks and thr car just feels faster all around. The 40mph-60mph deadspot that I had with 2.73 is gone.

You should be happy with anything between 3.23 and 3.73. I went with 3.42's because they are a good compromise between grunt and freeway cruising. 2.73's=2000rpm@80mph; 3.42's=2500@80mph; 3.73's=2700rpm@80mph. Take your pick.

Definately a stall!
I had a 3000 tci and stock gears last season, So i made the jump to a fuddle 3600 and aww what a blast that was for two weeks before changing gears. It just seemed slower? I don't know but If im not impressed at the track and swapping gears should at least give me a tenth or to you would think! I'm either putting a lower gear back in like a 3:42.1 (3:73.1's where swapped in) or put the damn stock 3.23.1's back in. Loose was fun while it lasted and you wouldn't think a gear change would make a car tighter!? It's hard because of all the traffic and neighbors while i figure out the adjustments on the shift points and mess with the diablo.
The first mod ever on my 94 z28 back in the day where gears, and the car didn't get any faster. It was fun to drive and definitely noticeable but i don't remember any significant gain on my time slip. Oh wait a pain until i programmed it not to shift to early and bump up the rpm? But that was years ago.
Good luck with your decision. Converter a must in my book first and even the mopar guys at work call me stupid "your going from a 3000 to a 3600 and think you can make that car faster."

Being that I have 3.23's already I am going to say that my gear selection was already done and I'm doing the stall 2nd to accommodate the minority and the majority of the people here.
I just don't see myself doing anything to that 10bolt gear wise at all. I like my 3.23's and I'm pretty happy with them. The only dilemma that I am coming to is whether to go with a SS3600 or a SS4000. P.S. They're on sale for June..

def go with a stall. IMO gears arent worth the money, u lose gas mileage, rear end wont last as long, and even though u will get that SOTP gain, gains usually arent that significant at the track.
