what causes a converter to "balloon"?

Torque converter ballooning is when the converter swells up like a balloon. I have seen them grow as much as .100" longer on our test dyno.
Torque converter ballooning occurs when you have too much fluid pressure in the converter (such as a stuck pressure regulator valve in the trans or a radical shift kit that raises line pressure dramatically) and the converter manufacturer has not properly reinforced the converter components to withstand the high internal pressures.
