I was wondering what size stall to get. I was thinking about getting a 3,000 stall it's going on a 383 stroker with a cc306 cam that will be my daily driver. I have never had a car with a stall, say if I get a 3000 stall just driving normal around town how many rpm's would it turn to get going? I now if I stab it it will flash to 3000. Is a 3000 big enough for a cc306? I want it to be very steetable.

 

Though some will say more ,Since you have never had a stall I think the 3000 will be ideal

That is a bit of a loaded question. Knowing that the car will be your DD is important. But what is more important is knowing where the cam begins to make power. Point is that if it starts making torque at say 2400 rpm then a 3k stall converter is not ideal, not bad but not ideal. In that example you would want it to flash near the 2400 rpm range. I am not atall sure about the cam / engine combination you have chosen. Your engine builder / tuner will help with that decision.

Generally speaking though, a converter that flashes to 3000 - 3400 should provide decent driveability on the street for the combination you have described.

I drive my car every day and I have a 3500 stall. It is plenty streetable for a DD.

 

So will I need anything else besides a stall and a cooler? Will I need to do any programming to change the shift points are anything? And I forgot to mention this is a LT1.

 

I just looked and the power range on the cam is 1,800-5,800

 

Then I would reconsider the higher stall.... what makes perfect sense to me is to take the stock converter to a good converter shop in your area and have them "max" it out. It will wind up somewhere around 2300 - 2600 rpm. 2600 might be on the high end for that 13" converter. And then again a smaller 10" unit would be less rotating mass... less weight. Either way I would keep the flash stall around 2500 rpms so that you can enjoy the full benefits of your chosen camshaft profile.

Should not require any reprogramming. And should not require extra parts.

go with one of performabuilts custom built 9.5 inch 3k stalls. everyones gonan shove a big stall down your throat but its up to you to decide whats a lot and whats not

 

i find it funny that most people you talk to think that a 3000 stall wont move from a stop till you rev it to 3000 rpm,,, i dont know how many times this comes up in conversation

i would go with the 3000, i have a west coast converter 10" 3000 and it drives fine

 

these people have never owned a big converter 4L60e car. vig 3200 is the perfect converter for your combo. good friend of mine has a 396 LT1 shifts at 6K rpms and runs 10.4 on a small shot with that converter. he is 97blkz on this site. go with a proven combo.

 

Does your friend spray off the line? If so im sure that 3200 converter flashes past 4000 or so. Nitrous tends to do that.

I had a Tci 3500 in my LT1 with bolt ons and went 12.70s easy.

Id say 3200-3600 should be ideal

 

he sprays out of the hole. i know he has gone 1.44 60' in a full weight car. 3200 is the minimum IMO car is absolutely daily drivable

 

so just driving normal what will a 3000 or 3200 stall rev too before it starts moving? Thats what Im curious about.

Depends on the converter , some are loose some are tight , Its wont move as easily as stock thats for sure it will feel like its slipping under light to medium throttle. If you havent had a stall before it may take some getting used to for sure .
