Hitting Rev Limiter on A4
Ever since a few months ago, when I go to the track, I'll hit the limiter at the top of 2nd I guess it is, at about 85-90mph w/ my 3.23s. It used to do it on the highway too but recently it hasn't.
The last time I went to the track and it didn't hit the limiter, was back in April. Since then I've added headers and orp and a ported tb. I also changed the tranny fluid and filter and I know I got the right fluid. I checked the fluid and it was slightly overfilled but I thought the 4L60E had an overflow valve. Maybe I'm wrong.
So if ya'll wanna take a stab at this, please do.

I had that problem too, at the track my car wouldn't shift into third so I had to let off a little, then it shifte but that really sucks during a 1/4 mile run....it happened a few times..so I checked the tranny fluid...it was ok although I'm in the process of doing the tranny oil change....then a friend of mine told me that those were signs of the tranny on its way out!...I'm still looking to find an answer as well but hopefully my tranny is ok...
Btw: it hasn't done it again...maybe it just acted up...i hear a lot of a4s are very vulnerable at hitting the limiter for any little thing...maybe its normal once in a while....but I'm in the same predicament.....!

Your tranny may be slipping. Are you running the stock MAF ends with a screen in? If not then you will glaze your clutches and then there's nothing to do but get them replaced eventually. A4's need the stock ends with the screen in.
The only other cause is usually low fluid but you said that isn't the case here.

The rev limiter on my 'bird kicks in at around 6,200 RPM on the chassis dyno. I've never hit it on the track. Sounds like something is wrong internally with the transmission...it's slipping or something...I wouldn't risk scattering it on the track if I were you. Are you shifting the A4 manually? If so, you're doing the transmission more harm than good with really no benefit in elapsed time on the strip. I think it might actually slow you down a little, as I've raced other 'birds that manually shift the A4 and I've beat them everytime.

it could be from where you added the mods and your car is revving faster and hitting the limiter. I nailed mine all the time on 2-3 after a did a converter and headers.

This was my first guess. Lately I've noticed my shifts on the street are a little slow, like the tranny is hesitating. And on the highway, if I floor it, it'll upshift for a second, then kick down a gear.
When I changed my tranny fluid and filter this summer, I couldn't get that damn rubber seal out from the old filter so I just kept it in there and used it w/ the new filter. My tranny wouldn't be acting like this from bad filtering would it? I don't think that'd cause this.
By the way, I've never shifted it manually.

Try raising rev limiter to 6400. Or, like Farmer said, lower shift points 1 mph at a time. '01 & '02 cars are famous for this--even on the street. Not usually a trans problem unless you've got 20,000 or more miles, or you've been pounding the snot out of it and getting trans & fluid REAL HOT. I know guys w/over 200 1/4 mi. passes and A4 still shifting strong, BUT, they change fluid frequently, and are running a good trans cooler. Best wishes. When my converter went in it would hit the limiter instantly when I nailed it in my sweet spots. Then when I got my headers in it got to where I couldn't even floor it. It would hit the limiter at any speed wot. HPP3 took care of that problem.

What would ya'll do in my situation.
-I'm still under GM extended warranty. So should I take it in and see if they find anything internally?
-Auto Tap it to see if it's throwing any codes. I wouldn't know if it's throwing any codes because my SES light has been on for 4 months due to no rear O2 sensors
-Or throw down the $200 for a used HPP and try to mess w/ the shift points?
Keep in mind I'm in college and the budget isn't too big right now.

Mine did the same thing man. Get under the car and check for leaks. My rear seal was leaking changed the seal topped it off with fluid and it was fine.

I just simply bumped it down with HPP3 1mph untill i got off the limiter. There was nothing wrong with the tranny at all. Its just when you do mods, your car changes and you have to adjust for them
I never hit mine on the street, but at the track its alot more strain going on and the car revs and shifts differently thus I nailed the limiter. Hitting the limiter on 2-3 is a common prob. Try lowering with HPP3, if that doesnt help then you may have a tranny issue like above.

Tell us: What year car? Mileage? What you have for mods? HPP3 is a good tool for A4 cars, especially, and used ones are pretty cheap online. WJ.
My car was doing this with custom tuning from Ed Wright, It started happening after the cam and higher stall Vigilante (3800). 2-3 shift was smacking the rev limiter on all 1/4mi passes. Ed said it was an easy fix so the computer is heading towards him now.
Before I needed custom tuning, I had the HPP3 and it fixed the problem after my first converter swap and gear change. So that is the way I would go get a used HPP3 and take care of it yourself. The dealers can't find a 9 inch nail in a tire, and will charge you $$ trying to fix it.

dang it.. i typed a nice long reply and had some error when i hit send
but HPP3 should fix your prob. Again it may not though. Just raise your limiter to 6300(100 above stock) and if you are still hitting it lower the shift points. Do you NAIL IT HARD(limiter)?? or is it like a tap tap then it will shift?
if its barely touches the limiter lowering by 1-2mph will stop.. i had to lower my 2-3 by 4 or 5mph to get off of it. 98's have a slow 2-3 shift for some dang reason
but i have 42k miles with stock tranny and about 21k of 1/4th passes LOL. I change fuild often also.
usually you can pick up a HPP3 for 150 bucks since most guys sell them and are getting EDIT now.
