I bought a 94 Formula LT1 383 and was told a 700R4 from Yank.
It is a new looking set up and a Yank convertor that says SS3800 and 05/03 on it.
How can I tell which trans it is and if it should have lock up?
Car screams, shifts hard and into o/d - but not into lock up.
Just want to know what I have...

Well unless its been swapped a 94 would not be a 700r4 but a 4l60e . Look for two things if it has a TV cable going from the trans to the throttle body its a 700r4 , If theres and round electrical plug on the passengers side just above pan rail its a 4l60e. In either case unless it was being run with a non lockup converter it should have lockup , Is likley a 4L60E though

ok - I can check for those Monday when the shop is open again, thanks. How can I tell if the convertor is supposed to be lock up? It is uniformly round, about 10" diameter with the 3 mount lugs
Theres not much way really except taking it apart or doing a lockup test PM me and Ill tell you how to do the test
