Default TH-400 Sludge

I replaced my TH-400 tranny pan with one of the thick aluminum w/ cooling fin deals... When I took out the old pan the tranny fluid looked perfect, but there was a thick dark grey/grey sludge covering the bottom of the pan. It is like a very fine paste (no chunks).
What could this sludge be?

The tranny was set up very aggresively, it would chirp third the first couple of months I had it, but recently has been a little more sloppy. Just to be clear, it still shifts fine (no delays and still firm), it just doesnt 'bang' the gears anymore.

Im thinking it could just be wear and tear on the clutches but I dont have much experience with automatics and wanted everyones advice.

The sludge is not abnormal. Automatics generate debris as they run. Clutch material and bushing material is perfectly normal.

It is highly possible that the unit simply needs to be freshened up. That's the nature of performance transmissions. They do wear.... how many miles are on it?

there is probly 15-20K on it (no odometer), they have not been easy miles though

Sounds about right to me.

Could be tim eto have it freshened up. But use your judgement, it should be fine.

I would agree with GILBERT its probably time for a freshen up with some new seals and frictions, We presently do not offer this service for any but our own units but I am sure GILBERT or one of the other sponsors will be happy to help you out there is you need it, I would not wait to long though.
