Can anyone help me find the write up on how to Make a Selectable first gear on my 4l60e I searched and no luck.

All you have to do is place your e-brake on, then put your shifter in neutral. After that you should be able to take off the plastic around the shifter. It unclips and slides up the shifter. You can turn it sideways for better access. Looks towards the back of the shifter console once your inside and you'll notice a peice of rubber that stops the shifter from going into first. Its on the passenger side of the ear lookin thing. Just cut it off and reassemble. Bam, you can now manually select first.

I have yet to understand what GM was thinking when they did that?

That is an easy one. The engineer who designed the skip shift needed a new job.

With 2.73 axle, manual 1st caused the noise level to fail at 45 MPH.

With 3.23 axle, trans will not downshift to 1st above 40 MPH (or whatever), so it passed the noise test.
