Just lost 3rd and 4th gears yeasterday. Car shifts normal going in first and second. Before losing 3rd and 4th the car was reving high when going into these gears until i let of on the throttle. Now when i try to go into these gears the car just free revs like its in neutral. What could be the cause? Maybe shift selonoids or do i need to have the tranny rebuilt?
Thanks,
Ryan

I just had a similar problem. I was at the track ready to launch at 3500 rpms, and BAM no movement. What happened with mine is I broke my torsen unit and the trans. The trans intermidiate sprag had "rolled over" and locked, this caused my 3-4 clutch pack to fry in about 10 minutes. Although it would drive "noramlly" in 1st and 2nd, it was acting like being in neutral when in 3rd and 4th (gear selector). I also blew my solenoid B. My trans was just rebuilt with high performance parts and all is fine. Your's sound similar, 3-4 clutch pack is going/gone.

My 99 Tahoe did that recently and the 3-4 clutches were burnt, and the shift solenoid was also bad.
You are looking at $1500-2000 for a performance rebuild.
I have a stock rebuild in the Tahoe and an FLP level V in the Firebird.

Ditto what PSJ said. I had that problem when my tc lockup switch failed. Unfortunately, it didn't trip a SES code. It caused my tranny failure. Check that out before you replace your tranny. I already had a "built" tranny, so my rebuild only cost me $1000.
