driving around town in 3rd?!

driving around town in 3rd?!

I was told by a "reputable" (I really don't think there's such a thing around here...but anyways) transmission shop owner today that I should be driving around town in third and only put it in "D" until I'm on the interstate for the overdrive. He says it will increase the life of my tranny and will not affect my gas mileage negatively. Has anyone heard this??

Typically you won't shift into overdrive until you are above 45mph anyways, and most around town driving is done below that, so I don't see the reason behind it. Maybe someone else has more insight on it though.

Several things happen when you place the car in D the line rises slightly the overun clutch comes on and can help support the input sprag. But for normal driving I see little point to it
