Default 4.10 install not a good one -what to do? Help!

Yes, yet another 4.10 install not done well.
It was done with a mechanic which I have a great relationship with. He has done quite a bit of work on my car with much care, but the gear install has not gone well it's a Motive and install Kit from Thunder). After picking it up this morning for the first time and driving it around all day, the whining is definately not normal. It's not just some whining, it's WWII Dive Bomber type shreaking in 6th at cruise, and consistent, loud whining at all speeds and all gears. Have noticed that the whine lets off when I let off the gas. I am not well versed in rear gear knowledge and terms, so I'd like to approach him tomorrow politely armed with a few suggestions. Anyhow, the 80 miles I put on the car could have really done some permanent damage, but I want to keep hope alive and see if this thing can be fixed.
Thanks!

No offense to your buddy, but take it to another shop, one that specializes in gears and axles. I had the same prob with the 3.89 gears in mine. They sounded awful. Took it to a gear shop to re set the pinion, and all problems solved. IMO, the pinion depth is either too far in, or out.

If your 4.10 already started to make a wear pattern, which it probably has, the whine will be there forever.. You may be able to qiuet it down a little by adding backlash, but that decreases its strength.

I think 4.10's are hit or mis.

Any new gear that is installed *properly* will not whine no matter what ratio. If you let off the gas and it makes noise on the deceleration that it is most likely the pinion depth that is not setup correctly (OTC makes a special tool to set these up 100% correctly) most people don't have this tool and just use the same thickness shim that it had in it before. The backlash may be a little off as well, but under deceleration it's normally the pinion depth. You may get lucky and be able to resetup the gears before it wears to much of a wear pattern in them if you get it to a shop (or do it yourself, etc) quick enough.

Good luck.

Car is back in the shop. The guy is more than willing to tear her apart again. Hope no permanent wear pattern exists, but with my luck (it's pretty much Murphy's 24/7), the gear is shot. Let's see... Thanks for the replies, I always learn a lot from this site, and I did do an extensive search before asking. Just wanted more info.

Pinion depth is off for sure. ask him if he used a pinion depth gauge to find the right shim thickness? and if he says no take the car some where else. I build a bunch of rearends and I know how to get the pinion shim thickness with out a pinion depth gauge.

I purchased the pinion depth setting tool through my Mac Tools dealer, and it was 475.00. It's kind of discouraging when you open the box and see what the tool consists of. But you really do need it to properly set up the rear end.

Your right you don't need a pinion depth gaude tool to fingure out what pinion shim you need. I bought one for $100 and used it once and figured out a way that is much faster, Just by using adial caliper and the pinion gear and the bearing race from the Diff. it's so easy and it's dead on everytime and heres the best part no whine.
