8.8 install
Well, i don't want to start any wars, but i feel both sides of the arguement, yes the 8.8 is a cheaper alternative, if you know the guy doing it, and you are close to him, but if you logically look at the situation, for the normal individual, i would rather spend 600 more bucks, since your already deep into your pockets anyways. Spend 600 more to get a tried and tested part from a reputable manufacturer, that can be held liable for warranty issues, instead of chasing down some guy that buit the rears himself, and no matter how good the guy is, unless he is at moser/strange/currie, using precise tooling and machinery, his tolerancies will not be as close as the rears from the bigger companies, and why not just spend the 2,200 and get a 9 inch, yeah the rob more power, but there are companies that actually off lifetime...yes...LIFETIME warranties on there 9 inch rears.
Just my thoughts, but until this 8.8 has been around for a couple of years on fast F-bodies, i'll probably just save for an extra month to get a 9 inch/12 bolt.

ZYA, you have some good points and your head is in the right direction, however there a one small issues that you mentioned that's not totally accurate. More times than not, espcially with Moser, they're rears are set up HORRIBLE from the factory. Search this section, you will easily find 20 people complaining about their brand new Moser's whining like a wounded dog. I know some local small shops that run circles around Moser's assembly.
I think this rear would be worth a shot, however it keeps one weak link from the 10 bolts.....the axles. They are still twigs compared to a 12 bolt axle, and people do break them. If this guy could figure a way to upgrade axles and make them work with our ABS/bolt pattern/etc.., I think he would have a real good product on his hands...

Well my I waited 4 weeks for the Moser 12 Bolt that I ordered from a local shop so I sent it to a good performance shop. When hes installing it he says that the U-Joint needs to be adjusted because it doesnt fit my 02 SS. So I say fine and he sends it to be adjusted. Well I drove it home today hearing an annoying whining sound. The faster I go the louder it gets. When I let off the gas the whining goes away, if I step on the gas it comes back and so forth..Any Suggestions on what it might be??
Oh, My tranny and rear end gave out on the same run but I dont think the tranny would make that noise because its coming from the back of the car(I drove in gear 3 the way home) Thanks..Jacob
wow how unusual a whining moserf. I have a local shop who just runs a pattern and his don't whin, what is wrong why do these whine so much???
On another note, using stock LS1 axles with a stock traction lock would break the axles...ask Mustang guys what breaks when their rears are stock....the axles. If you have any question, shoot me an email, I'll try to answer them.
Thanks
Scott

A torque arm (a long ladder bar of sorts) puts alot of stress (all of the lifting of the suspension comes from the T/A) that a welded, added on mount won't be able to support.

i guess that puts the 9" out of the game then as well. because it has welded, added on mounts doesnt it?

The 9" housing is a nice round, flat sided piece that the T/A mounts are welded to, while the 8.8 is housing is rough, has brackets for the upper control arms everywhere, no flat place to weld the T/A mounts to. Don't even get me started on the half and half axle tubes. My point from the beginning was, the $100-$300 that you can save versus a 9" that has been PROVEN , unlike the craze for some shop to fab up a rearend, weld some brackets, weld some tubes, and presto, bulletproof rearend, we'll sell a million. It doesn't nor will it work like that. Like I said, I hope it does work, but I really don't think it will. The whole topic of an 8.8 was brought up because of the "outrageous" price of 12 bolts and 9" rears, often said to be as high as $2500-$2600. I showed above that you can build a 9" or a 12 bolt for ~$1500-$1700. There have been about 20 threads about/by people that were gonna do an 8.8, gonna do an 8.5. As I said above, the main reason for upgrading to a 9" or 12 bolt versus fixing or building a 7.5" POS is for piece of mind and confidence in your rearend, neither of which I would have in a fabbed up 8.8, IMO. Let me know when its done and how it holds up to some abuse. I bet it won't, but maybe it will. Let us know.

NO OFFENSE to anyone, I just like to be different and try something new.
You have to admit if it does work, wouldn't everyone who wants to have a drag/everday car want one.

well in order to be a piece that is proven, some one must try it right??? That I guess will be me. Though i will only be running 10's when i will probably stop modifying we will see how it does. So far i have not broken my factory rear so i doubt i can break this

and just an fyi, the older 8.8's(the ones designed like the 9" with a third member) were stronger than the 9" FROM THE FACTORY
