Default Help me with my converter choice.

Guys i was looking into getting a converter for my 98 TA. Im saving my money to do every thing at once. As it looks as of now i will be going with the ATI tuner kit running 7 psi. I all ready have Hooker LT's w/ ORP. They 12 bolt and converter will be going in at the same time. The three converters i was looking at were the PY3400, the PY3600, and the SY3500. It will be running thru a Moser 12 bolt, 33spline, 1350 yoke, posi, 3.73's. Wich one will hold to the most abuse?? I was thinking the Pro Yank. They other thing is with the STR. I believe its 2.7 on the PY3400 and 2.3 on the PY3600 and 1.6 on the SY3500. Would i be better off going with the SY3500 because of the softer launch?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The Pro Yanks are always great choices for cars making serious power. The PY3600 is going to be much better for track use. The PY3400 is a really tight converter. It's better suited for nitrous applications that make tons of torque at low rpms. A blower motor needs more stall.

If I were you, I'd be leaning toward a 9.5" converter with a very high STR like a Yank Super Stock 3600 or a Vigilante 3200. These will spool up your blower motor better than the Pro Yanks.

The Super Yank 3500 is the wild card of the bunch. It will spool up your motor well because of it's lower STR, it will give you a cleaner launch on the street (because of its lower STR), and it will have more efficiency and holding capacity than the 9.5" converters. If you can put up with the slightly mushier throttle tip-in vs. the high STR converters, you may have your winner.

Patrick,

I emailed Mike from Yank about getting a converter for my car. I've got S1 heads and 216/220 cam. I told him I might be going with ATI's 5# or #7 kit. I told him liked the SS series converter but for some reason he recommended the PY3600E. You have a lot of experience with converters. What one would you recommend? Is the PY3600E converter loose? I don't want a real loose converter. I have a Vig3600 now, I could also have that stall reduced to a 3,200 or 2,800 i guess. Just want to hear your opinion. Thanks.

Den,

Mike was giving some sound advice, the Pro Yank 3600 is a really good converter with a blower (although I like it better for heavy doses of nitrous).

I think you'd be happier by sticking with a 9.5" converter. It will get you into boost mode quicker and have a little longer shift extension...two things a blower motor needs and a nitrous motor does not. For these reasons, you should either have your converter restalled to a Vig 3200 or get a Yank Super Stock 3600. The Yank is better, but for the cost difference in upgrading your converter from a Vig to a Yank, you could start saving for some other nice mods like a 12 bolt. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
