breaking bellhousings
friend keeps doing it on the 78 camaro with th350 and a cam only 355 sbc
he runs 8.1's or so and seems to think hes making so0o0o much torque that its beaking them and says people are telling him its the unibody...i think theses people are full of it and his block either isnt flat or he isnt gettin it sitted on the dowel pins correctly or soemthign mechanically wrong...its happened on 2 seperate transmissions

That engine is not making enough power IMHO to break multiple cases... cam only small block? No power adder?
I would think there is something wrong in the mounting. And no, it is not the unibody. F-Bodies have always been unibody construction... think about it.
It is not the body and not the power output, so there can only be a misalignment issue.

I wonder then if his engine aand transmission alignment is correct. If both cases broke similarly, then I would think the problem lies with the engine mounting. I suspect it is high in the back.
Does the transmission rest on top of the crossmember or does he have to do anything unusual to get it to bolt up to the crossmember?

If the engine mounts are stock rubber and the tranny mount is solid it can cause a transmission case to break. Also, are the engine mounts in good shape (i.e. not broken or worn out)?

Right, that's good info I should have posted, thanks!
Maybe I should have said something more like... make sure the engine is mounted properly, is where it should be. Improper engine and transmission alignment has killed more than a few transmission cases.

Well the JW part is more desireable component in high H/P applications for sure.... but keep in mind this car is not putting down near enough energy to warrant that expense in my opinion.

I doubt it seriously, I have owned too many of these F-Bodies and still do have a 1st gen Firebird. I know that a mild to nasty small block with a th350 behind is not going to be prone to breaking transmission cases. They just don't.
WHy don't yoou guys give me or John a call tomorrow and we'll see how we can help. There is an alignment issue that has been overlooked here I am sure.

My friend broke two th400's in a mild gen 1 powered 84 c10 because of this. He never raced it.
