Default Effect of altitude on stall speed??

I just ordered a Performbuilt level 2 because I lost 4th gear. It currently has a 3400 2.2 Fuddle in it. Whether or not that converter is toast I figured I would like to try a new stall.

I am currently living at 4500' approx (when I bought it I lived at 700' approx) . For the life of me I cannot remember what it would stall to at 4500, but it wasn't close to what it used to be. So I am leaning towards the SS3600 or PT4000.

Anyone know how altitude affects the stall speed??

Thanks.

well I would lean towards our converter instead , however the only efect that altitude can have on the converter is due to a decrease in the power output from your engine from the thinner air .Less power equals lower stall

Altitude alone will not have an affect on stall speed. The power output of the engine will. So in turn, it may make a converter feel "tighter" at altitude vs sea level or lower altitudes where the air is better. Example, if you have a 3500 stall at sea level, you may need a 3800/4000 converter at high altitude to get the same desired stall speed... good question.

Converter doesn't feel "tighter" per se - the car just feels slower all around (again due altitude).

For the last 2 months I have been driving all over WY (as high as 5200' for long periods of time so the car has adjusted to that) to Salt Lake City (4200' for long periods of time so the car has adjusted to that as well).

The deciding factor for converters I think will be the shift extension. I want to say with the 3400 Fuddle in it now the revs drop to 4700rpm. I read on here somewhere that the PT4000 it was around 5300rpm which for my combo (lid, BBTB, LS6 intake, flowmaster) I would think is a little too high. The only future mods beyond this will be LTs w/TDs. I wondered about increasing the shift points to 6200/6300.

Does anyone know the shift extension on either converter?? SS3600 or PT4000. Does shift extension increase or decrease with the amount of power the car makes??

Shift extension increases with power. PT 4000 shift extension with full bolt-ons is ~5200 rpm whereas a H&C car will see ~5600 rpm. SS 3600 will be 300 - 400 rpm less than a PT 4000.

Shift extension is great, you want to be in your power band.
