Slack in the tranny?
My 1-2 shift is usually really hard and the other shifts are randomly hard. Sometimes in good weather the shifts are very soft and almost unnoticeable. The tranny still feels fine but I can't stand the annoying clunk from the hard shifts. What is causing the clunk from the rear? My rearend also seems to be fine, with a recent fluid change and no signs of hard wear. What's the deal?

So the 1/2 shift is too firm?
Have you checked your mounts, u-joints and exhaust fitment?
Be sure to look at the torque arm mounts as well.

the u-joints are brand new, brand new tranny mount. maybe it's the exhaust backfiring? but why would it do that? the exhaust doesn't move around at all. it's mounted pretty solid and gives no slack.
could a worn torque arm bushing cause a clunk?

yeah, that is what i figured it would be. that bushing has a crapload of miles on it too so i'm sure it's cracked or something. i was thinking of just getting an energy suspension bushing until i can get a UMI adj torque arm. is there a better temporary alternative?
when replacing the bushing is there anything i need to watch out for to not ruin anything around it like load or pinion angle or something like that? and what are the torque specs and bit size I'm going to need?
thanks for your help guys!

If it is an original bushing, and the car is a '98... why not just install the factory mount. It will go in easier, it will last forever and it is probably much less expensive than the aftermarket part.
And it is pretty straight forward to install.
