Default a4 shifter linkage problem

I just reinstalled my new motor and trann from the bottom. The first time I started the car it started in gear. SUCKED! Apparently, I somehow managed to break the shifter cable. I just bought a new cable and when I put it in I made sure the shifter was in park position and the trann was in the park. Now I can shift it to a lower gear but it will not go back into park, it stops at reverse, even though the shifter position says park. I took that little clip out and compressed the spring for less slack but nothing! I can still manually put it in park. Anybody have any ideas whats wrong?

You mean I broke the cable I just put in 2 hours ago? The shifter will change the gears both up and down but it just doesen't push the selector pack in park. Are you saying I broke something inside the transmission?

Sorry I didnt note that youhad installed a new cable only the syptom. But since you can put it in park underneath its not the trans thats broke, And that only leaves shifter cable or shifter, Do you have all the retiners clips in place ?

Yes sir i believe so. There are two metal clips plus the one "slack Holder" clip on the end closest to the trans. It seems like it should be really simple. Now I couldn't get the old boot out of the hole from the original cable, so I cut around the new "boot" on the new cable, but I don't think that would cause any problems.

Maybe I am not doing the install right.
1) I put the shifter in park.
2) I put the trans in park.
3) I replaced the cable.

I agree. I'm doing it the way its supposed to be done...right? This should be a fairly easy thing to change. Going from under the car to inside is definitly not working, and it's REALLY PISSING ME OFF! I think I'll try and sleep on it before I break something else. I appriciate your help brother.
