Default good speed to start at in a roll race? Downshifting manually?

I like racing from a dig but alot of the time people I race want to go from a roll since i want to go from a dig. Well i'm just wondering what speed would be good to punch it at from a roll? 20mph? 30mph? 40mph? or what? Also, does anyone down shift there cars to roll race?

there is a deadspot that our autos have!! i think its around 30 mph i think. but i heard you dont have any more deadspots once u get a converter. as for manually shifting, i think its kinda dumb to do that to an auto. dont manually shift, cuz u might f*ck up your tranny.

I only asked about downshifting becase the other day I was racing a friends modded STi and when we lined up on the interstate, he dropped to 2nd but I was stuck in
4th and when I punched it, it shifted really hard and I actully spun(pretty cool)even though i'm stock, also the STi jumped a car on me before I started going because of having to wait for the tranny to shift. I locked on him and started to reel him in but at 130mph, he was still ahead. I figured if I could start in second like him then I might be able to beat him.

yeah i shift mine myself and definately from a roll cause of the delay we have but as far as a good speed i cant remember when i was stock but anything above 3000 cause that is where the power is, just remember to shift up and not hit the limiter!!!!

30 roll is definatly the sweet spot for a roll. Shifts right up into the powerband. i wouldnt shift it mysleft it can **** up the tranny. Also if you racing from a higher roll just punch it on the second honk and by the third honk your tranny will just have shifted and you will be taking off

What a good speed to race it is depends on your gears. The dead spot is a little different on 3.23 LS1's then ones with 2.73's.

If you have 3.23's then you have two speeds that are the absolute best to race from. 20-30 mph and 55-65 mph. Either will put a big smile on your face. Just avoid 31-50 as this is the HUGE dead spot on 3.23 geared autos.

I've heard the worst dead spot with 2.73's is 37-55 mph. As for downshifting manually, DON'T DO IT! It's very hard on the transmission and you'll be killing your 4L60E. You're much better off just roll racing from sweet spots and letting the transmission shift itself.
