Default Tranny wont go into overdrive?

*sigh* One problem after another...

Anyway, my tranny acts fine if it sits several hours and cools off. But after that, my transmission will not go into overdrive. Ill be cruising at 45-50mph and my engine is at 2500-3000rpm rather than 1500 with the OD.
It will also start to do that if I go out of OD and try to go back into OD. It will stay in drive. I also seem to be missing 1st gear. If i shift down into 2nd, it will go, but wont go down into 1st. 1st gear is there when its working properly as well. I don't believe the tranny has ever been rebuilt, I have ~83,500 miles on it.

I read some other topics, could it possible be the sprag? (similiar issues in the other topics). If so, how much is that to replace? I hope I dont have to rebuild the entire thing If it comes to that, Ill live with it for now, then do a tranny swap in the summer to a 6spd.

Tranny fluid seems to be fine, i checked it and it was full when it was hot. Ill check it tomorrow when its cooled.

Another side note - My tranny used to "pop" when I went from 1st into 2nd when driving, used to jerk quite a bit, but it went away after a week or two. So i didn't think much about it.

sounds like you may have a faulty shift solenoid A (1-2) as it must come on to make 1st or 4th

I found the price for the part. Its ~30$. Is it a tedious job/PITA to do or is it easy to fix?

Easy fix if you can replace the filter you can change the solenoid.

I took it up a local transmission place and they did a test and told me that I had a Rear Sun Gear that was cracked. I believe thats what they told me, I don't remember the part name, but I know it had the word "Sun" in it. Anyway, they told me I had 1st and 3rd gears, and No 2nd and 4th. I argued with them. I know for a FACT that I have 2nd and 3rd, I'm in the "FailSafe" mode of the transmission. They argued with me so I left. They said I need to do a complete rebuild of the tranny, around 1500$. Which isn't bad for a rebuild. But I believe that they were trying to get money out of me. Either that or they don't know what they are talking about.
Im 101% positive that I have 2nd and 3rd - I know my car and I know how it shifts. Also, 2nd gear goes up to about 75/80 before redlining, that can NOT be 1st, haha.

Would I cracked Sun gear, or whatever its called cause me not to have 1st and 4th?
They told me that they are known to break(I researched and that part is true).
"Known for loosing reverse, 2nd and 4th gears the 700R4 sun gear shell has a very high fatigue failure rate."
I have 2nd and 3rd and reverse are all fine. So I don't think they know what they are talking about.

Everything drives and feels completely normal except for the two gears missing.
I'm taking the car up to another transmission shop tomorrow.

Anyone have more thoughts, or does it still sound like a fault shift solenoid. I also googled and researched my problem a bit more and I still come to same conclusions as stated here, Faulty Shift Solenoid.

I really hate places that are stupid and/or try to rip you off, they have me all pissed off right now.

I would say the are definatley wrong about the sun shell since you have a normal reverse. I am still leaning towards the shift solenoid myself . Now if they are correct and it is 1st and 3rd You have then you could indeed have a broken 2-4 band.

I'm 100% positive I have 2nd and 3rd. I know my gears. But thanks for the reassurance, I needed it. Ill post the outcome tomorrow after I get it fixed.

Took it up to another shop. They properly found the bad solenoid code. Replaced them, replaced filter and put in new tranny fluid. 300$ later and Its all fixed. Wish I was able to do it myself, I need to learn tranny's >.< 300$ is a bit much to replace 2 40$ solenoids. *sigh* Oh well, thanks for the help though
