It can be done by a well trained individual. The question is why are you changing a planet? If it has exploded or is making metal the whole trans should be disassembled and cleaned throughout.

Its tediuos but can be done but I too would ask the reasonng for changing it, Generaly as mentioned if a planet fails it will put debris through out the trans . Or if it is whining its sign of a further lube issue in the unit. Now if your doing it just to upgrade to 5 pins and you have no issue at present I would not bother as the risk of issues from doing the change in a good trans are greater than the odds of a 4 pin planet failure,

I wanted to take apart myself to see if that is the problem and if I wanted to tackle the rebuild or take to someone. Lot of work, but I like to tinker with things.

Well I would not recommend you tinker with your own automatic if it is your 1st one to open up. Buy a core, take it apart and see if you then want to tackle yours! Then, if you do open yours up you'll have the replacement hard yous for yours... just and idea.

Take the pan off, if theres metal flakes the vb has to come off and come apart.
First 700 I built ran great, no noises, nothing. Just had metal flake red colored fluid, one of the gears was just floating on the pin with no bearings.
Back then I bought a new one from GM for $90, I didn't know I could have had two cores and probably two good planetary sets for $80. So buying a core to take apart and mess with might pay off.
