Question th400 question......help!

is there suppose to be a spacer or washer between the filter and the valve body that the bolt goes through? bc when i took the trans cover you can move the trans filter up and down but the bolt is screwed all the way in. and the transmissions is in a 1970 olds cutlass

Does it have a deep aluminum pan on it? If so then there is a filter extension missing.

If it has a stock pan then you need the correct filter screws.

The guide bolt for the fliter in the 400 will allow some movement. Note how its threaded then gets larger with no threads where the filter rides on it.

I think Gil you meant to say filter screw/bolt. If using a factory shallow pan, the bolt has a shoulder on it. No spacer required for the bolt. If using a deep pan, then a spacer is used along with a longer bolt with a shoulder on it that is used as a stop. With either pan a shorter or longer filter extension is used depending on the pan depth. In either case the filter is loose fitting and what you are seeing is normal providing that the correct pieces have been used. Post up some pictures is you can. This will better help us to tell you that you have the correct pieces or not. Vince

That is the right bolt for use with the pan you have. Vince
