Bought a converter used and talked to someone at Yank about this and they told me to just reuse the stockers.

Make sure that the bolts are not to long or to short.

I had a set of stockers shear off and so did my friend. Not sure if it was due to improper installation or what (a local installer did it, he knew his **** though.. had a low 10 sec z28). If you can get some hardened ones easily I would go for it, cheap insurance.

I always used the Stock GM Bolts from my local Chevy dealer. They are cheap and have never failed.

As long as the threads match the converter and the bolt heads aren't near stripped reuse them with loctite.
Everyones got their stories...I used grade two 3/8" bolts in a one ton truck with a 454 and never had a problem.

Question Stall converter to flexplate clearance ?

i installed my vigilantie 3500 stall converter in my transmission and tightened my transmission bolts up and now i have about .260 of an inch with the stall converter pushed all the way in the transmission , ..260 is the gap that is inbetween the TCI flexplate and the torque converter where it bolts too , so what should i do ? i hear thats too much of a gap between the Torque converter and the flexplate to just pull it tight with the bolts!!

Thats just over 1/4" so put an SAE 1/16" washer in between each.

SAE washers are Smaller on the OD and don't vary in thickness in case no one knows.
(where on the other hand you get hardware store washers and a handful are all different thicknesses.)

where do you find these washers at? i would think these washers would through the flexplate off balance a little bit...

I just wanted to comment on this...since I read this before I went to Lowe's...

I got a couple packs of SAE washers..and they DID vary in thickness...ranging from 0.055-0.069.

Get automotive grade 8 SAE washers. They're gold colored.

The post that says use SAE washers doesn't mean Standard as opposed to metric, but washers that are actually called SAE.
They don't sell those at lowes, ace hardware has them and some automotive stores.

Well, they actually have a section in Lowe's that says "SAE washers"...but I guess you're right..they're not gold

There are two types of hardware: SAE and metric.
Washers are usually labeled by size, like 1/4 inch (sae) or 10mm (metric)

The store I go to has washers labled SAE grade 8. They have a smaller OD than the regular washers.

I seriously doubt you'd notice your car had washers in there that had a .014 variance. I've gotten away with worse.

Well...I was told by a local speed shop who builds a lot of awesome cars..it would be OK to stack 2..since I need ~0.125 shim...

And I got 6 washers, 2 per bolt...(haven't put them on yet)....but the 3 stacks range from, 0.122-0.125

So hopefully that isn't too much different?

(Right now my gap is 0.295...so those would get me under the 0.187 spec)

I've grabbed a box of misc parts before and used washers with different ID's, OD's, eyeballed the thicknesses, and had no problems.
I seem to get away with stuff others can't.

If you measure them I'm sure you'll get close enough.

Ever see a converter freshly welded up still on the lathe having the runout checked?
The washer thing isn't a big deal after you see whats an acceptable runout spec.

Yeah, I have a digital caliper..so..like I said...surely a 0.003 variance won't hurt? hah

But now you mention grade 8...I wonder if the ones I got are "strong" enough?
