The Best V8 Stories One Small Block at Time
it only needs to hold up for about 3 months till i get my tranny built, then i would get new bolts or should i just get them now.
Everyones got their stories...I used grade two 3/8" bolts in a one ton truck with a 454 and never had a problem.
SAE washers are Smaller on the OD and don't vary in thickness in case no one knows.
(where on the other hand you get hardware store washers and a handful are all different thicknesses.)
I just wanted to comment on this...since I read this before I went to Lowe's...
I got a couple packs of SAE washers..and they DID vary in thickness...ranging from 0.055-0.069.

The post that says use SAE washers doesn't mean Standard as opposed to metric, but washers that are actually called SAE.
They don't sell those at lowes, ace hardware has them and some automotive stores.
Washers are usually labeled by size, like 1/4 inch (sae) or 10mm (metric)
The store I go to has washers labled SAE grade 8. They have a smaller OD than the regular washers.
I seriously doubt you'd notice your car had washers in there that had a .014 variance. I've gotten away with worse.

Well...I was told by a local speed shop who builds a lot of awesome cars..it would be OK to stack 2..since I need ~0.125 shim...
And I got 6 washers, 2 per bolt...(haven't put them on yet)....but the 3 stacks range from, 0.122-0.125
So hopefully that isn't too much different?
(Right now my gap is 0.295...so those would get me under the 0.187 spec)
I seem to get away with stuff others can't.
If you measure them I'm sure you'll get close enough.
Ever see a converter freshly welded up still on the lathe having the runout checked?
The washer thing isn't a big deal after you see whats an acceptable runout spec.

Yeah, I have a digital caliper..so..like I said...surely a 0.003 variance won't hurt? hah
But now you mention grade 8...I wonder if the ones I got are "strong" enough?
