Re: 4L60E OPERATING TEMP?
over 210 is bad, no doubt about it. only time mine gets that high is after i make a pass down the track. however...i consistently see 195-200 cruising. i have the 24k cooler and a deep pan that holds 3 more over stock. that seems high to me...anyone else?

colonel...i do have a 160 and fans to match. another reason im so perplexed. its not like i keep the trans in D and cruise at 65, lol. im really not sure...maybe the cooler isnt getting enough air. maybe their is a restriction somewhere on the line? i guess anything is possible.

Useful thread!
I used to Autotap my tranny temps constantly.
With my iron block, I was usually around 180F driving around, sometimes 175F.
After a pass I might get around 200F. If I hotlapped and did a 2nd run I'd hit 210F.
I would park the car at that point.
That's probably why my FLP level IV worked so well.

Re: 4L60E OPERATING TEMP?
The thread I been looking for. I have a tranny cooler (not sure on the size, but from Thunder Racing), and I am still seeing 205* around town with a stock transmission.
These temps are making me think twice about that 3600 stall 'verter sitting in the garage.
I have the cooler mounted in front of the condenser.
Any ideas on what to do other than the 160 stat and lower fan temps?

Re: 4L60E OPERATING TEMP?
my cooler is located up front...partially in front of the intercooler. i even have some of the styrofoam type stuff taken out to have air directly come into the coolers. i think from now on as soon as i get in the car im just going to turn the fans on and not turn them off until i get out. ill see if that helps any.

Re: 4L60E OPERATING TEMP?
Here's the most common mistake that we make when we do this type of temp testing. I know I was certainly guilty of it. We always like to ATAP during WOT runs and yes this heats things up but it is also at the best air flow when you're in that 70-90 mph range and the fans are on.
Please make sure you do some ATAP testing on the city streets to see what really goes on. We put the tranny temp gauge in after we put my trans blanket on and I almost had a heart attack. It looks like daily driving with the tranny blanket retains an extra 15-20 degrees of heat in stop and go city/construction traffic.
If you routinely see temps heading up over 205 then it's time for a bigger cooler or in my case two coolers. I run a 19000 and 24000 daisy chained and it compensates nicely for the city driving. It's pretty rare for me to see above 195 at all now and I actually made 3 back to back to back runs at the track last Saturday without getting above 180.
So don't look at you WOT run temps and think you're safe all of the time. Do some sample testing when the converter is doing the stop and go shuffle before it has a chance to lock up. That's where you're real heat exposure is going to be.

Re: 4L60E OPERATING TEMP?
maybe 2 coolers will be the answer after it is all said and done. i dont have atap, so im forced to read my trans temp gauge. in city driving is where im pulling 195-200, after the car warms up of course. i have not noticed anything odd when warming...i.e. it does not warm up abnormally quick. ill keep an eye on it to see, but as of now im just not sure whats up.

Re: 4L60E OPERATING TEMP?
well im about stumped on this. when i drove around yesterday i turned my fans on immediatly. temp went to 195 after driving for a while. maybe a second, smaller cooler is the answer. 175 around town would be ideal.
