TC Phobia, please help!
I know the benefits of a higher stall TC. What worries me is the adverse effect on the tranny. Will changing to a Higher Stall mean eminent premature tranny DEATH?
Is there a stall range that is worth the mod (in power gain) but is merciful to the tranny?
I'm thinking 2800? or 3000? or 3200?
All comments dear to me.
Thanks
Please consider I live in TX, VERY VERY HOT
Okay, keeping that in mind you MUST go with an aftermarket cooler. The bigger the better is the best way to approach the subject. Go with a 24-28K GVW Cooler with a good fan added.
Size? Its a matter of choice, I like big stalls. But you should get some more input from the other members on this board. Have Fun! FSSTNT
B. Performance gains vs. dollars spent is the best deal out there for an A4.
C. Getting the right converter can usually avoid a rear gear change. A
higher STR converter will hit harder and drive better as a daily driver
at the expense of torque multiplication dropping off faster than a low STR
converter.
D. Do your research upfront as to what one to buy. '01s/'02s may need the
torque management deleted. There are a bunch of good choices out there.
The VAST majority want more stall after their initial purchase so keep this
in mind when choosing one. Even if restalls are free, shipping and installation
costs aren't.
er um... I like big stalls
go w/a Vig 3200 or 3600 and you'll be fine...I've gotta 3600 in mine now... prolly up to a 4400 next year
Vig 3600, I've been reading here that this really not their true stall, more like 3800 or 4000. Still I read that pumps are the first to go with added pressure. Is this common with a TC change?
Higher pressure may take out the valve body.
Clutch packs in the trans may fail if h.p. is increased substantially.
A great converter with 3.73s is a Yank SY3500.
True. It's also a pretty inefficient converter.
Get a nice 3500-3800 stall (true stall speed...as mentioned, Vig underrates their stalls for some damn reason) and a tranny cooler and you'll be good to go. I also like the TQ management deleted and a good shift kit such as TCI's.

What do you think Colonel? Thanks for all ur input .
Here's my recommendation...
Get a TCI 3500-3800 or a TCS 3500-3800 with a really high STR (that's Stall Torque Ratio.)
Get a tranny cooler.
Don't expect the LCAs, bushings, and TQ arm to noticably improve traction. The stock stuff works just fine for an A4 all the way down to 1.4 60ftland.
Reset your goals to 11s. Low 12 will come alot easier than you think once you get headers, a good converter and some traction.

. I have a Vig 3200 Converter (with tuning) and was hoping to hit at least 12.4, and well as you can see my best has only been 13.1@105. But I guess its mainly because I have a 2in drop, ran with the 18's, and have 2.73 gears. SHARKYMARK - Right now your doing better then me and don't even have a converter yet. Also kind of baffled how your 2.1 60ft beats my 1.9? And didn't you still run that 13.0 with the 18's? As you can see I'm still somewhat new to this, not too happy with my time.
This was my best time and it is not consistant. On average I was running more in the range, 13.04 even 13.05+
I haven't gone to the track with the ET's yet and I've added 3:73s. I'll see what's happenning when I do.I like your ride height, mine is stock. From what I read around lowered rides launch slower, something to do with weight transfer. Also I took my car on a diet and it only weighs 3740 lbs with me in it and very little gas. Around 3560-3580 without. I was hurting on the 60 ft mostly because of tire spin.
Uhh, yeah, that might have something to do with it!

With 3.23 gears, a stock weight car with an internally stock engine, and Nitto drag radials, I pulled a 1.61 60ft time. Gimme ET Streets and 3.73s and I'll pull mid to low 1.5s.
Don't expect good ETs if you're not launching hard.
In general though I can't stress enough how much you will benefit from this mod. Keep in mind that there is an approximation equation that goes something like: every .10 subtracted from your 60' time will gain you 1.5 in ET reduction.
I was kinda scared to do the swap myself but i'm very glad I did. I've already dropped my ET's from 13.7 to 13.3 launching @1900rpm on DR's, a difference of 2.1 60' vs 1.9 60'. I feel very confident that I will be able to launch succesfully at 3100rpm or higher. Unfortunately the track got rained out and i couldn't run again for better times. I consider this to be extremely good considering the 3100' track elevation, DA and my limited mods (lid, catback & ST3500) I should be seeing 12's next test and tune night. I'd be happy to talk to you at length about the swap and other Q's you might have as I'm still very excited about the install - palin1@comcast.net
I don't fear using one, I fear the expenses that might probably result from the added strain on the tranny. I only got 25K on the Z and it gets so hot in TX, especially in summer; sometimes over 100oF. Still though it is a "must" mod for any serious streetracer. I would like very much to read your report, if u want send it to AIECH69@hotmail.com.
