Default Should I flush or replace the filter ??

Ok guys I have 04 GTO with 22,000 and I want to change the trans. filter & fluid myself but I have a dilemma. I want to change the fluid with royal purple or other synthetic brand but if I replace the filter & refill the fluid it would only drain 5.5 qts of fluid. I don't know how many qts the trans. holds but How can i replace the trans. fluid completely if I do it myself since by dropping the trans. pan only 5.5 qts of trans. fluid is lost & there are plenty of fluid left inside the trans. & torque converter? Also what brand of fluid and do you recommend synthetic or stay with dexron 3 with my mods listed below ???

dont use synthetic. go with regular dex III. as for the fluid, i think its 5-6 quarts. from what it seems, i think u just drop the pan, dump out old fluid and put some new fluid. not sure bout the filter.. does anybody have any pics of how the filter looks and how its supposed to look in the tranny?

Dexron 3 regular or synthetic ? I am not lazy didn't u read the whole thread, If i go with synthetic half the trans. fluid would be regular Atf and other half fliud would be synthetic and i don't want to mix synthetic w-regular dexron ATF. I need to know how I can replace the 11 qts of trans. fluid if i do it myself by dropping the trans. pan. Because by dropping the trans. pan you would only loose roughly 5-6 qts of fluid.

Synthics are designed to protect the metal parts. I would stay with Dex 3 for now. I've been asking the schools and seminars about this and Lucas, but still no concrete evidence. So, I advise my customers to stay with the recommended oil. Amsoil has an auto trans atf with a friction modifier, but at 13-15.00/qt, no one has bought any.

I bought 14 qts of valvoline regular trans. fluid, I am going to do the fluid change tomorrow morning. After I change out the filter & replenish the lost 5-6 qts, How do i remove the remaining old fluid & replenish ?

You can't, unless you have the proper equipment.

Actually, people have done it without a flush machine by unhooking the cooler lines and letting the output line empty into a drain pan while adding new fluid to replace what comes out. I wouldn't do this personally, seems way too risky, if it were to pump out more than you could pour in the tranny could run dry.

Your right that's a bad way to flush the tranny. Very easy to damage the tranny that way.
