Default What tells the trans what gear it is in?

Does the trans get it's 'signal' to be in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc from the shifter mounted piece or that actual location of the cable-ie where the lever is at on the trans itself.

Car feels like it is starting in 3rd gear from a dead stop and it shouldn't.
31xx#s/4.10/A4/PT4400/bolt on LS1. I have a B&M Pro-stick as the shifter and it does not have the sensor on the side (obviously).

It sounds like your in limp mode meaning yo have a hard fault and need to scan for codes the PCM determins what gear the car should be in. But its uses the singnals from the PRNDL (neutral saftey switch)and PRESURE MANIFOLD SENSOR) to know what manual position its in but If the PCM is in safe mode(LIMP) its does not use the signals and only basically turns of its connection the the trans causing 3RD gear only. Get a scanner on it and you should be able to see whats wrong pretty easy

This is a swap into an LT1 car, the only codes that have shown are fuel related...there were some others but non trans related.
I will reset VCM and see what happens......
wondering if the aftermarket shifter is not going to work, unless I can determine if shifting it by RPM is safe for the trans...("Level 4" from a company with vac mod)

97 LT1 that was initially an M6.
I have the P/N Safety Micro switch on the shifter wired into the wiring that was used for the Clutch safety switch.
