Default Converter advice please!

I have the oppurtunity to pick up a brand new, never used, TCI #242931 3200 stall for $350.

I've read the threads on how great Yank and Vig are, and the warnings about TCI. If money wasn't an issue I'd definitely get the Yank 3600, but at $350 I can save close to $500 (over the Yank SS3600) and that would almost cover the cam/springs. I've always been a best bang for the buck person, but thats because I have to be. I'm sure many of you are the same way.

So... current setup in my sig. My car is my daily driver (only car), and reliability is pretty important. The plan is (at least until its no longer my daily driver) converter/cooler, cam/springs, and maybe see high 11's (hopefully without losing the rear end). Keep in mind I don't abuse the car to much and it would probably only see the track a few times a year.

Any advice appreciated...

I would not go with TCI. I've heard too many horror stories, and seen firsthand (through my roommate) what their crappy converters do when they **** out. I wouldn't put anything with a TCI sticker on it on or in my car.

TCI is an absolute PITA to deal with as far as warranty concerns... and when your TCI converter takes out your 4l60E with pieces of there lockup clutch clogging up the transmisson lines they wont warrenty **** and now you'll need a transmission and a new converter....

Watch the classifieds like a hawk and pick up a lightly used quality converter for cheap.... or pony up the money and do it right a converter can do more for your car than a cam can with the right converter selection

You know the warranty won't transfer, and its only 90 days or something anyways.

Did your roommate beat on the car? Did he have a tranny cooler? Was he racing it every weekend?

I wonder how many of these horror stories are 1. actually the fault of the converter 2. due to user misuse (no cooler etc.) 3. a result of the magnitude of sales.

I've thought about doing this, but would want the peace of mind by sending it back in to be serviced.

Is it true that Yank charges $250 for that service, and PI is free (hard to believe)?

PI is free once within two years, $225 after that. I don't know about Yank. That's a refresh and/or restall too though, so it's worth it

Define "Beat on it".

Good point. I guess I was just looking for answers to the other two questions... Cooler? How often did he race it?

My point was that several people are quick to blame the converter, but I wonder how often its truly the converters fault. Not to say that Yank and Vig aren't built better than TCI, I see that.
