Default Transmission Maintenance

I have a 98 z28 auto. The original owner never dropped the pan and had the filter changed and topped off with new fluid. At 66,000 when i acquired the car it was the first thing i did. Now at 83,000 i want to do it again before i go back to school. Is dropping the pan and replacing the filter a good thing to do as often as possible or should it only be done if it has been done regularly from the very beginning. I've been getting mixed messages from my transmission guy and the father.

If you flog the car, changing the fluid & gasket every 10 - 15k miles is a good thing.

Ragtop: If you've got a pan w/drain plug, why drop the pan and change the gasket??? Or, you are just talking to the no-drain-plug-guys, yes? Best wishes. WJ.

DOH...I meant change the filter.

You can get away with just changing the fluid, but changing the filter doesn't cost much or add much time and as the clutch packs wear down the amount of crap floating around starts to grow.

I change mine every 6 months (Pan dump and filter). Transmission runs like new. No prblems. I've had my dad do this to his 93 suberban and it still shifts strong. He has 280k miles on it now.

Everybody forgets that trans fluid is oil too. Oil eventually breaks down sooner or later. Your trans guy tells you diffrent because of the diffrent experiance he has had . Usually when someone brings him a trans for a fluid change the trans is toast already and changing fluid makes it worse. Yes if your trans fluid is black, smells,& has little pieces of debris in it a fulid change might make it act up. But timely maintanence helps it last longer. Just when you pull the pan out ask to see the bottom of it.Make sure its free from any debris and your trans should be ok.
