Default LS1 swap 4L60e problems!

I just finished helping a friend swap a 98 LS1/4L60e into a 95 Z28. We bought a 98 TA with a smoked tranny for the parts car. Our original plan was to use the 95's tranny. After installing everything, it wasn't shifting properly. I don't think it ever went into 1st gear, and had no power in drive or overdrive. Acted much better when put into 2nd, but still not right. After a week or so, that tranny was smoked.

Afterwards, I was told by a local performance shop, that the 95 tranny will only work with a 95 PCM because it uses a different signal. I bought that and assumed that if he had the TA's 4L60e rebuilt, it'd run like a champ.

Yesterday he got a call from the trans shop saying that the car wanted to start in 3rd and wasn't working properly with the new tranny. So he picked it up, and sure enough, it was doing the same thing.

With a 98 PCM, 98 wire harness, 98 motor, and 98 tranny... what could be wrong? My best idea is that the wiring/signal from the PCM was already bad when we got the car, and we simply transfered the problem with the swap.

He's starting to get kinda bummed about it after 6+ months invested in the swap, so I'm trying to help him resolve this quickly.

How can I check the signal from the plugs on the tranny? I have no idea what to check for, but I do have a multimeter.

Thanks in advance, guys.

first make sure you have 12 volts to pin E of the trans harness
