How difficult is it to do a 4L60e rebuild yourself?

I've gone as far as removing the trans pump and valve body. I'm not sure what's left after that though to remove the entire assembly from the housing.

I've done it, and if you're just wanting to do a stock-style rebuild its not bad at all.. I watched my tranny builder do a portion of HIS rebuild --which don't seem to fail - haven't been able to break this one yet-- anyway.. he did all kinds of stuff to it that I can't duplicate. He pulled out a notebook with a bunch of hand-written notes he's accumulated after building these things for 14 years.
You WILL need a few specialty tools to do the rebuild correctly, like a turbine shaft seal ring installer, something to compress the clutch pistons so you can change the lip seals, stuff like that. If you wanted a ghetto rebuild (just replacing the friction components) you could do it without any specialty tools at all, but there's no guarantees it'll be much/any better than what you started with.
