Re: Non-computer controlled trannys...disadvantages/drawbacks?
None that I can see. Manual shift means that the only computer problem that I could have would be my brain.
I was never a big fan of computer controlled transmissions in a performance car. On my mom and dads Cadillac...great. But not on high horsepower application.

Re: Non-computer controlled trannys...disadvantages/drawbacks?
These are a few that Ive come up with:
1. Cant change shift points through PCM (must do it with weights internally)....
Well...I thought that I had a few in mind when I first started to make this thread...if any of you can add on to the list, please do so. I know that some of you may prefer a computer-controlled tranny and some of you dont. To those that dont..probably can point out some bad things about it. Anyhow, if you want, you can list the advantages/pluses about 'em. There may be a few that I dont already know about. Thanks

Re: Non-computer controlled trannys...disadvantages/drawbacks?
advantage:
less likely to break
you can change the shift points to anything you want anytime you want because you are the shifter.
disadvantage:
harder to be consistent because your reactions introduce a another variable.
you need a shift light or more accurate tach if you shift above ~6300 rpm
line pressure is frequently 100% even when you are just tooling around, so your shifts will be extra firm or hard (you may be able to avoid this with vacuuum modulation)

Re: Non-computer controlled trannys...disadvantages/drawbacks?
The tranny that I will be using will be equipped with an automatic valve body, but I will be able to shift manually if I wanted. Im not sure where Im going to have the shift points set at, but if I was to shift manually, I would do it around 6400/6500 as I do in my 6-speed. Does going from a manual to a auto have any affect on where the car should be shifted at? What makes non-computer controlled trannys less likely to break? Thanks

Re: Non-computer controlled trannys...disadvantages/drawbacks?
The only real advantages are 1: easier tuning and instant shift point changes through the PCM. 2: A properly tuned computer controlled trans can run less line pressure under light load, increasing milege, efficiency, and reducing heat and unnecissary drivetrain stress.
