Default Trans cooler for a DD? Overkill?

I have a commute and a half. I live in OC but work in LA County--40 miles to and 40 miles from five days a week (love my 30mpg). Not able to move right away, but I love the job and I couldn't pass it up. I'll move out there in about 6 months.

I've only had my Z for a little over a month, but I've been into Thirdgens for a few years. The last F O R M Y 350 I had ate it's stock 700r4. While it was down, I borrowed a friend's 90 Suburban...which also ate it's 700r4 on the way to work. Needless to say, I'm afraid that my commute will kill my new baby.

I drive sensibly to keep gas mileage up, and I only haul a LITTLE *** every now and then. I plan on changing my Trans fluid and filter about once a year. What else can I do to prolong it's life? The car has just under 46k now. Would it be worth it to me to pick up a tranny cooler? Should I even worry about it, or am I just freaked out?

If you ever plan on installing a aftermarket converter then definitely yes. Go ahead and get it out of the way. If you don't then the car will most likely do just fine without one, but for $60 or $70 its cheep insurance. A cooler will do nothing but lengthen the life of your transmission either way.

Even on a completely stock car its a good idea to install a trans cooler.. I was shocked to see my completely stock trans constantly running at 220-240 deg all the time. After the cooler temps dropped to 210 at the most. After I installed a lower temp thermostat and change the fan settings the trans stayed around 200 deg all the time.

A trans cooler definately will not hurt anything on a DD. If you really want to know you could get a tranny temp guage and install and keep an eye on the tranny fluid. If it starts approaching the 180 degree mark then a tranny cooler would be a good idea probably.

I added a cooler as soon as I bought my car (it was stock except for a K&N filter.) When I got my stall, I purchased a second cooler and a gauge. This time of year, with the A/C on, and stuck in traffic, I'd get close to 200* in stop and go traffic when the car wasn't going fast enough to lock-up. After adding the second cooler, I wasn't getting the lower temperatures like I had been reading about, so I moved them around - dope-style, in front of the condensor/radiator, and I finally found, for me, hanging them off the back of the bumper bar.

Just add one for good measure
