Default Transmission ?'s

Got a tranny question. Sometimes when i crank my truck up, not necessarily in the morning or cold or hot days but just every not and then about once or twice a day when i drive it, when i crank it up and put it into gear it wont shift into that gear. its an automatic 4L60E transmission. it wont go into gear for about 10 seconds sometimes. and the fluid level in the tranny is normal. what could it be?

The term we use for that as Technicians is "Delayed Engagement". It can be caused by a multitude of different things.

If the filter is clogged by excessive debris, it will do that. If there are worn seals on the Low Reverse piston, if there is a sticking valve, if the PCS Solenoid is inop, if the pump is worn, if the pressure regulator valve is sticking and so on... it will do that.

Point is, you need to have a professional look at it and give you their opinion.

How old is the unit?

Then I would have to say it's time for a rebuild or an upgrade. The rubber seals are worn, the clutches are worn, the pump is worn... I could go on.

Hate to be the guy to break it to ya... but that's my opinion.

I would imagine the first thing to try is a new filter and some fresh fluid and see what happens. If that doesn't fix it then its somthing internal to the trans.

IMHO that is a waste of time and effort... and good parts. It is only prolonging the inevitable.
