Default Converter questions

I have a 2000 T/A and I recently moved up to a 226/226 .591/.591 113 LSA cam and I have most other bolt-ons with 3.23 gears. It seems sometimes rolling slow from a light the car seems sluggish and kinda jerky. If I slam it WOT from a 5-10mph role the car will be very sluggish for a few seconds then really kick in hard. I have heard that maybe a higher stall will help with this? Is it bc the stall would keep me up in the cam's power making range? The tranny and converter are all stock now.

Which leads me to my next question. With a higher stall and stock transmission, making somewhere in the 370-380 rwhp range, am I asking for trouble, i.e breaking things?

Thanks

Go with like a Vigi 2800-3000 for that setup.Get the tranny cooler(B&M)and you wont have to worry about things breaking.Converter will take away the dead spots and you wont have the sluggish problems anymore. And yes the stall will keep you where you need to be.Its a good investment to have a converter.

Could I go with a 3600-3800 Vigilante? If not, what would be the reasons for not going that high?

You need to know that Vigs stall alot higher than they're rated. A 3600 Vig is really more like 4300, for example. That's NOT a good daily driver and it's a very inefficient converter for the track (you'll lose some MPH compared to a more efficient converter.)

For a street/strip car I normally recommend something in the 3200/3800 range. It depends on how loose you want the converter to feel.

I really love this TCI 3500 in my '02. It's the best bang for the buck in the converter world, IMO. TCS and Yank both make GREAT converters too.

I have something similar to your problem. I have a pig cam in my A4 without tunning and a stock stall for right now. Sometimes if i am crusing at 30mph and i floor it, it won't down shift and it will just pull sluggishly till it gets in the power band. I have heard that missfires will do this to the converter. Any one have any clue what causes this?

a 3000 to 3500 will be a big help with your cam. looseness will get you past the low rpm jitters (except during lock-up) and get you into the cam's power band.

I have a 3000rpm stall w/ 1.8 str non-lockup with smaller cam, 3.73 gears and it works very well. No bogging down on lock-up, just punch it and always ready to go. Gas mileage is suprisingly good on the hwy. Can still maintain 60mph at 2300-2500rpm comfortably.
