Passing gear?

Passing gear? Alright i was driving my dads car its a 1998 trans am with the stock auto transmission. I was attempting to race a SSR from about 60 mph. When i punched it the tranny seemed like it didnt't hit passing gear. Is this a common problem? dead area? can it be fixed with a shift kit or anything.
It sounds like an issue with the 98's computer. I have read some issues with this year in particular with this same complaint. I know that tuning the vehicles computer is what usually fixes this issue. Does the vehicle have any codes that are being thrown?

Yes, we replaced the airbox with an slp air intake. Just yesterday we installed the new max energy hypertech tuner. However we didnt try to change shift points with it. The car has done this since we have owned it. Is it possible to use the hypertech tuner to change that problem?
I have a 98 z28 A4, when I am at 60mph and I floor it, the car downshifts hard as hell, and plants your azz. I have got the HP Tuners done on it, he messed around with the shift points and now when you floor it and it hits second at 6100 rpms at 48mph, the car gets almost completely sideways.......I think if you get a tune it should be fine.....
First to let you know I am not a tuner. I do not believe that a hypertech is going to the trick unless it is something new from them that works like HP tuners or LS1 edit. I basically posted up because I have seen this issue with the 98 computers. You maybe should start a thread in the tuning section to get a better response. I do not feel that this is a transmission issue is what I'm saying. Vince
