I saw it on the news last night. A proposal for cars manufactured in the last ten years only having to pass visual inspection and throwing no codes. No actual emissions test.

That would be a blessing from the car gods for it to be that ez to pass smog tests in CA. Would suck after your car was ten y/o but...
I know there will probably be a boatload of tree huggers fighting this though. I think there is enough car freaks in CA that would register just to pass this though. LOL.

The way I understood it any car made between 2001 and 2010, by year of production, would not have to be emissions tested until it was 10 yrs old. So as long as my 06 (made in 05) WRX threw no codes and passed the visual inspection, it would not be checked for emissions until 2015.

+1. Most modified cars will pass the sniffer, which I feel is more important anyway. Who care's what it looks like, as long as it's not killing the environment. Makes more sense. But then again, California isn't making much sense these days. Which saddens me.
