WASHINGTON — General Motors is recalling 38,444 2008-'09 Pontiac G8s to fix a defective airbag sensor, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"With the front passenger seat positioned full forward, the seat position sensor will cause a 30 milliseconds deployment delay between the first and second stages of the dual-stage frontal passenger airbag," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "In the event of a crash, this delay may result in increased head injury to certain front seat occupants."

The problem was discovered during validation testing of the 2012 Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle, which uses a similar component, said GM.

GM dealers will reprogram the sensing and diagnostic module on the affected G8s. The automaker has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners can contact GM at 1-800-620-7668.
